Default Syracuse - 2nd best city to relocate!

I saw this little bit of info on one of Buffalo's news channel's website:

Relocating to Buffalo | WKBW - TV Buffalo, New York | Local News (broken link)

Quote:
A new study shows that Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse rank in the top five best mid-sized cities for relocating families. Primary Relocation of Memphis is out with its fourth annual spring survey. Syracuse ranks second, Rochester third and Buffalo fifth for mid-size cities. None of them were on the list last year. The rankings are based on factors like cost of living, crime rates and education.

I googled it a little more:

Quote:
In cities with population of 600,000 to 1.3 million, Syracuse ranked second, followed by Rochester with Buffalo placing fifth. None of the Upstate markets ranked in the top five a year ago. Omaha, Neb., topped the mid-sized list, with Knoxville, Tenn., rated fourth. Albany was 12th on the list.
Additionally:

Quote:
Among large metros with population of 1.3 million and higher, Pittsburgh rated first overall.

Utica! Just kidding. Seriously, congrats, Syracuse is sure making a name for itself. The word must be getting out, there are a number of people on this forum who are interested in relocating to (or back to) Syracuse.

Syracuse also ranks in the top 25 places to do business in the US which is one of the reasons my husbands company is opening an office there beginning of next year.

The problem with NY (not just upstate) is the various taxes that companies have to deal with. I remember when the state government was negotiating with some brewing company back in the mid to late 90's(around) to take over the Miller plant, and the company wanted tax concessions and the state wouldnt do it. You would think in order to bring back some industry the state would be willing to play alittle ball.

I love NY, especially upstate, and if I wasnt a business owner, or wasnt in the IT field I would consider moving back. The area and people are great but financially not so much

jrice-totally agree with you about taxes both for businesses and for living expenses in general. The local governments really need to do something to stimulate the economy and make people want to stay, to relocate and to bring business back to NY. I lived south of Buffalo my whole life until 10 years ago when I moved to Charlotte because there weren't any jobs available. Now we are headed back home and we are so excited. I miss NY!

I think when the time comes (and the area remains the same--attitude wise) we (wife and I) are going to retire in Syracuse. its home
