I'm looking to move to the area next school and Ed Smith is on my radar as a school that might be a good fit for my two boys. I'd love to hear your experiences with this school (district, in general)?

I'm looking for a place that is not discipline-focused (there are other ways to address issues), has mental-health support, allows for student self-expression/creativity, challenges students who are academically advanced (these kids often get ignored) and offers all-around a healthy environment (thumbs down on hall fights, bullying or close-minded/judgmental teachers).

I've seen some private schools in the area that sort of fit the bill, but I can't afford them, and I highly value diversity (racial, ethnic, neuro, socio-economic, etc.). (Private schools do not tend to have much diversity).

I am open to other areas in upstate. Feel free to point me in any direction.

Thank you in advance for sharing your thoughts.

With the bolded, it depends on the school. Charter schools are actually public schools, that has funding that goes with the child.

I would look into Syracuse Latin first and then Ed Smith. Syracuse Academy of Science(a charter school) is worth looking into as well.

I've had family that have gone through other SCSD schools just fine, but it really depends on the family and child.

I would also consider asking around to different schools and districts. Suburban SD's like Jamesville-DeWitt, Onondaga Central, Liverpool and even North Syracuse are some to look into. Even select areas of other suburban SD's like East Syracuse-Minoa, Lyncourt(kids have 2 options for high school in Solvay or East Syracuse-Minoa(both HS's also participate in a program for free tuition at the local community college), West Genesee and Fayetteville-Manlius.

Is there anything else you are looking for in a community or neighborhood?

As mentioned in another thread, this school has a program that is worth looking into as well: Montessori at LeMoyne | The Syracuse City School District | Syracuse, NY

Can find more information in the school report card.
