Thinking of retiring from NYC to Ithaca. I don't drive, never have and have heard good things about McGraw House. Is it possible to get to supermarkets, pharmacies, libraries from McGraw House. Is that particular area of Ithaca fairly walkable? Any input would be very much appreciated.

It is essentially in Downtown Ithaca. So, you can walk to the library, a pharmacy and other places. There is a Wegmans on Route 13/34/96(aka South Meadow Street), which is a 4 lane street and is a 15-20 minute walk from there.
Thanks for those links. I'm not necessarily commited to Ithaca but I do want out of New York City and preferably someplace where you don't need a car to run daily errands.

What other places are you considering? A nearby small city that comes to mind, if you can find a place is Auburn, which has a library and a Wegmans(with a pharmacy) in its Downtown. So, that may be another place to look into in the general area. Here are a couple of street views, the library: https://www.google.com/maps/@42.9289...7i16384!8i8192
Thank you so much. I'm checking into Auburn and trying to learn a little more about it. I sent away for information from Stryker Homes and am looking forward to hearing from them. I know they have no availabilities right now but I like that it's in a walkable area. My biggest question is whether or not they would accept two elderly, strictly indoor and well-behaved cats. I am still working two days a week here in NYC but once I fully retire, I would meet the HUD income guidelines.

Also, do you have a budget? I ask, because there may be “regular” apartments that could work for you as well. I’m thinking in terms of not just cities, but walkable villages as well.
My rental budget for either a studio or, prferably, a one-bedroom would be $1000 monthly.
Ok…Thank you for the information. Some others in the area that would fit what you are looking for, Oswego: https://suttoncos.com/rental/seaway-lofts/ (It is close to the Big M Market, a pharmacy is down 1st West Street in Downtown and the library is on the other side of the river).
Thanks again, particularly for the Centro Bus links. When I do make a trip Upstate to check out either Ithaca, Auburn or Oswego, I would most likely have to take Amtrak to Syracuse and take a Centro bus from there. Either that or take a bus directly from Port Authority Bus Terminal here in NYC. I'm nervous about both PA and Penn Station though because of the crime situation here. When the time comes I'll have to bite the bullet though and pick one over the other

Just as a heads up, Ithaca has its own system in TCAT(Tompkins County Area Transit). So, to get there from Syracuse, you can take a bus to Cortland(which could be another option) and then possibly catch a bus from Cortland’s small bus system via this line: https://www.way2gocortland.org/local...aItem-k2c12t75 or other options from there to Ithaca: https://www.way2gocortland.org/regional-bus
I may include apartments in some of the suburban villages outside of Syracuse, which work as well.
There is also this place in the Eastwood neighborhood of Syracuse(essentially the outer NE corner of the city): https://christopher-community.org/pr...es/st-josephs/ (there is a library not too far away, multiple pharmacies in the neighborhood and a couple of grocery stores in the general area, with the apartment having bus service to each of them on Wednesdays)
