Well, the Souh side is the most notorious side of the city. What's odd about syracuse is that every side of town has pockets or sections of good and bad within them. Where the University is, the East side, is the considered to be the nicest side of the city. I work at SU and the funny thing is, is that by Brewster/Boland/Brockway(Western part of main campus), there are projects across the street and highway. Fortunately, you don't see any serious crime coming from people that live there. You still have to use common sense regardless of where you are though. For the most part, the campus is pretty safe. Hope this helps.

Made a map (not very good, I know) outlining the worst neighborhoods in Syracuse...

Hope this helps!

Pretty much, give or take. Good work Bellafinzi. Some around here would exaggerate it, but that is pretty accurate. I also want to say that most of the crime is not random. So, as long as you aren't involved in a certain lifestyle, you should be fine around here.

CK is right as well, I've been through some of these neighborhoods in the middle of the night, after visiting friends on the West Side, and South Ave. (not near SU) is not the place you would want to be walking around. If you're in a car you're fine, and during the day nothing happens.

The only area near the University that I would take be careful in is the area between the far end of Thornden Park and Downtown, at the end of Comstock Ave., and maybe the area around Brewster-Boland. When I say "be careful" I mean don't walk alone there late at night if you can help it. In the daytime any of these places are fine and might even be a place you'll end up living eventually.

The irony is that one of the most highly regarded neighborhoods (Strathmore) is almost flush up against some of the worst areas.

Some main streets like Onondaga and Bellevue are buffers, as well as some of the adjacent neighborhoods. Strathmore is also pretty close to Onondaga Hill and the Valley too. So, it depends on what direction you go in as well.

No, SU is fine. Most of the South side west of I-81, for the most part, is what people are talking about. SU is next to the East side and not the rough pocket either.

Talking How do these bad parts compare to NYC bad areas

See title...thought it would be nice to know...as an NYC'er I have seen my share of bad areas and areas in decline...would your bad areas be milder
to an NYC'er or downstater..
