can anyone say something about fayetteville new york?
My parents are looking to retire to a beautiful town in the East. They live in San Fran right now. They have considered Maine Or Vermont but a thread poster suggested beautiful upstate New York. They found Fayetteville in a tourist mag and liked the look of it. They would like a quaint scenic small town , mabey with a river or lake near by so that my dad can fish. Money is no object, they have planned well. Thank you for your insight

Fayetteville is probably the most affluent community in the area. Very nice town and nearby Cazenovia is also affluent with a Lake right there as well. Skaneateles is similar to Cazenovia and is on the other side of the county.

Fayetteville isn't really a small town - it's a suburb of Syracuse, which means you can expect a car-oriented culture and shopping plazas and the like. Manlius has a smaller feel to it.
Skaneateles, on the other hand, does have a self-contained "small town" feel even though it is upscale, and if money is no object, you might appreciate having a lake right there.

If you dad likes to fish he may like Oswego.
There is a large river that runs right through the middle of town with a large paved walkway and railings along most of its length. People fish there all the time and in the fall there is a salmon run that attracts people from all over. There are fish cleaning stations and guys who will fillet your fish for you. You can hire a drift boat for river fishing or a downrigger equipped one for lake fishing. The lake is huge and game fish are impressive in size.

It's the city of Oswego though there is also a nearby town with the same name.
It is full of hills which give a peak of the lake. The city is maritime based and we get tall ships as well as international yachts. Most houses are a hundred years old and close together though there are a couple of new McMansion areas on the perimeter. The city is laid out on a grid system so no place is further than a couple of mintues from the water. It is very walkable. The hydro plants make for waterfalls right in the center of the city.
There is a big orientation towards kids and seniors, many activities. It is normal to see church dinners, community chicken bbq's and fundraisers for people undergoing extensive medical problems. There are outdoor concerts in the summer and a farmer's market, museums and a revolutionary war fort at the harbor. There is also a college for the stimulus that provides. Crime is almost non-existent and there are many social clubs to join. The nearest larger city is Syracuse half an hour away with three regional hospitals including one of the best heart surgery hospitals in the state and another which is a teaching hospital attached to a medical school. There is a local hospital too.

Oswego also has nuclear plants at its doorstep. The background radiation in the area is higher too..little scary IMHO. But others may see no problem. With jobs scarce people may welcome the risk of having a Nuclear plant(s) in their backyard. For me its not worth the added risk. Once again IMHO...I have to go feed my three headed dog and glow in the dark cat.

I used to live in San Francisco and now live here in Syracuse.
Fayetteville has a small area where there are older homes and it's somewhat small town-ish, but most of it is very suburban and the main reason people go there is the Fayetteville Town Center, a shopping center with a huge, ugly parking lot and chain stores.
Skaneletes is nice and compared to San Francisco it is a huge bargain. However compared to everything else around here it's pretty expensive.
I haven't been to Oswego yet.
Good luck to your parents with their relocation.

People in Oswego don't worry about the nuclear plants much 10 miles outside the city. There will be many more of them all over the US as we turn away from fossil fuels. The oil fired steam plant now largely closed down caused much more of a problem.
My father-in-law was a Berkley educated PhD physicist on the board of the NRC and his opinion was that three mile island proved that our safety systems work. They are highly regulated. US designs are not at all like the Russian one in Cherynobel.

Baldwinsville might be another option as it is a nice village with the Greater B'ville area having about 35,000 people. Many people fish in the Seneca River and there are things going on in the village during the summer.
Cicero and Brewerton by Oneida Lake could be places to check out too.
