It's blatantly obvious you have never lived in the Syracuse suburbs...

The Syracuse suburbs are very safe. It's when you live in the city, you need to worry about crime.

Personally, if you plan on living in one of the nicer suburbs in the area, I'd take comments made by people who have only lived in...... the city, or East Syracuse or Minoa, Lycourt, Solvay or parts of DeWitt...with a grain of salt.

The city is a much more depressing environment than most of the suburbs. Therefore, if someone makes a comment on here who has only lived in the city or East Syracuse etc....don't let it influence you too much.

It's sort of like someone who has only lived in the Bronx and never ventured out of his neighborhood.... saying that NYC is an awful place to live. For that person who has only lived in the Bronx.... New York City may have been a terrible place to live, but that does not mean all of NYC is a horrible place to live.

That's why you should never listen to the opinions of Syracuse University students, city residents that never venture out of the city, or even someone from suburbs like East Syracuse, which is almost as depressing as the city.

Near's I can tell from other posts by this individual, they've either never been to Syracuse or are hell-bent on trolling as if they haven't. Are there neighborhoods in which crime is high? Certainly. Are there neighborhoods where it isn't? Certainly.

In either scenario, it's a no-brainer that if you care about the belongings in your car, you lock your car. It may not stop something from happening, but it's a basic deterrent and a good idea no matter where you are.

Crime happens everywhere. Some places more often than others, but you don't magically become safe because you're not in a city - and that goes for every city, not just here.

That's an awful high and mighty attitude.

OK, let me clarify. I would advise not listening to all the negative comments made by SU students, city residents and people who live in places like East Syracuse who try to make blanket statement about the whole Syracuse area based upon their limited experience of living in only certain neighborhoods.

Is that better now?

God did not give me the gift of writing, so sometimes my thoughts do not come across very clear. I try my best though...

That's much better

The addition of the word "negative" changes the meaning of the statement rather dramatically, doesn't it?

I just would like to say that I'm coming as a person that was born and raised in this area. I've lived in the city of Syracuse, Onondaga Hill, Liverpool and Mattydale. My wife is from the east Syracuse area and I know that area well too. So, I try to bring an honest view of the area. I go into "the hood" parts of town and have lived in some of the most affluent parts in this area as well. So, if I post anything, I'm not going to give or try to give some slanted information about the area.

That is the best way to go. Syracuse is a very easy city to drive around and you can go from one side of town to the other within 15-20 minutes easily. I say the fastest way to Syracuse from NYC is to take 80 into PA by Scranton, then 380, to 81. A lot of people take the Thurway, but I believe that way is faster. I've done from Rockland County to Syracuse going Route 17 to I-81 in about 3 and a half hours. So, it's a decent trip.

Most of the lodging is in the Carrier Circle area of East Syracuse/DeWitt, the 7th North area of Liverpool/Salina and some on the Route 31 area of the town of Clay. I would say to check the Carrier Circle area first, as that area has a lot of places to choose from.

Also, what type of area are you looking for as far as a place to live or see?

Since you are coming in October I would highly recommend going this way

Whitestone bridge
to Hutch north
to Cross County Pkwy West
to Sprain Brook Pkwy north
to 287/87N, over Tappanzee bridge
stay on 87N until harriman
exit onto 17 west
all the way to Bingamton,
81 north to Syracuse

I've done this ride in less than 4 hrs without speeding. Going 17 west thru the mountains at that time of year is really beautiful.

If you want to stay in the down town area I suggest the Hawthorne Suites, or the Renaissance hotel. If you have a 4-yr old you probably would like a pool, if that is the case you probably want one of the hotels in the carrier circle area.

Stupid comment about locking car doors up here. Most of the syracuse suburbs are very nice and safe - much safer than anywhere in Queens (which is also quite safe in most places).

Figure 5 hours for drive up here, with short stops, from queens (4.5 hours without stops). Also, with the price of gas and cost of tickets, I try to stay within the speed limit. I get about 26mpg when I drive 65 mph and 32 mpg when I drive 55. That's a big savings.

Quez69's directions are the way we go. It's actually a pretty nice drive.

Beak & Skiff is good for apple picking. There are some other apple picking places in the same area. It's beautiful to see those trees full of apples. It's a great idea for a vacation.

Housing prices are MUCH MUCH lower up here than in Queens. The lifestyle is much slower. To me, it is a better place to raise a family, although I do like to go to queens for the restaurants and excitement in small doses. We keep a small co-op apartment in forest hills for vacations. It makes for a good mix.

That's my favorite way to go too, and you can stop in Roscoe's Dinner in Roscoe it's actually quite good and its almost the halfway point.
