free-man - they're referring to areas closer to the city, we rarely lose any power in and around Syracuse (and if it happens it's generally overnight and back on by morning), and I've never known anyone to have to shovel snow off the roof. Snowblowers are contingent on the size of your property, and of course whether or not your adverse to old fashioned shoveling. For me, a shovel and a bucket of ice salt has sufficed for many a winter.

Up here on our hill (1156') we got about 7", most melted today. 3 miles away in Manlius they just got a dusting. The plows were out right away and it felt like we took up where we left off in April. I love snow, but I like to get thru with autumn first!

The most important thing to remember for non-locals is that snowfall can vary significantly within just a few miles in this part of the country. As a general rule of thumb, south of the NYS Thruway gets much less snow than those who live to the north of it. CNY gets lots of snow relative to the rest of the country so be prepared.

Wood here is abundant and cheap compared to fuel oil and propane. Yes you need shovels and a snowblower or hire someone to plow because one way or another you will have to move snow around. Another thing its not always lake effect snow that falls, its ice storms too. They are a treat to deal with also. Lastly one thing people must be aware of that some don't care about and others have a problem with is lack of sunshine throughout the winter months. The lakes are cloud makers and during the winter it is steady. Oh and one more thing, the state and counties do take very good care of the roads but if you are driving in it your vehicle will be ate alive by the salt. Good luck

I think the longest I've been without power was maybe two or three hours and that was in the Summer. Other then that I've never really had any power outage problems. It depends on where you live.
Can someone give me a list of the last 10 times it's been 20 below?

I can't say that such a low temperature has occurred here in my lifetime... perhaps? -10 happens a few times a year, typically overnight, but like someone else said, heat is usually run on gas. So, in the instance of a power outage during extreme cold, heat isn't a concern.

I looked it up,
the last time Syracuse reported a temperature 20 below or lower was in 1982.
Note: I was unable to find accurate data for the years 1996 or 1998.

This has turned out to be funny beyond belief, a pissing match if you will. Oh and thank you free man for backing up what I've written. Moderator cut: argumentative/personal debates/attacks

I'm not sure why you're so offended by opposing statements...
You were saying that Syracuse has all sorts of horrific weather conditions in the winter - including being snowed in, sporadically without power all through the winter and NEEDING a generator, and having to personally move massive amounts of snow - and really, that's simply not true.
The "pissing match" you refer to consists of personal statements from Syracuse area residents and links confirming that no - Syracuse and its suburbs do NOT have the problems you attribute to it.
The center of the Tughill Plateau, Osceola, is just over an hour from Syracuse... it's not a suburb, by any stretch of the imagination. You have different weather from us. Heck - Clay has different weather from Dewitt and they're only 15-20 minutes apart... but the point is that both towns (which are in the actual "Syracuse area" that this board showcases) are well maintained and do NOT suffer from the frequent power outages and [apparently] oppressive snow in your area.
It was not a personal attack on you - it IS not. Perhaps you weren't aware that things vary so much within an hour's drive... no one blames you for that. But we are saying that things ARE different. It's a statement; not a "pissing match."

I have heard that Syracuse gets snow little by little. Is this true? Or do you get large amounts of snow at once as well?(I am not talking about tug hill, only Syracuse and it's suburbs.) Also, what is the deepest the snowpack gets?
