In the one Wisconsin County with almost exactly the same population as Onondaga, the data on this site lists the average wage per job as 35,780
in NY and 35.450 in WI.
So you are indeed correct on the wage issue, though one would have to be a savy investor to parlay that 6.35 a week into covering the 60 % increase in property taxes.
BTW , I saw the guy I refered to yesterday and asked him if property taxes were an issue in moving from NY, he said not really, but they are in why I won't move back when I retire.
Again, I myself would live in Syracuse myself if family considerations did not require me to be here.
However it doesn't serve Syracuse to blindly ignore the facts.

Actually, based upon the figure #35,450, that would translate to $18.63 per hour not $6.35

The 6.35 is per week x 52

Very true, jr but thats mainly in the south.Although some New England state are tricky.
WI and MN have none of there "add ons" like car and personal prop. ,WI has 5% sales tax with food and meds exempt.

What I like about Syracuse is the natural beauty of the city and surrounding area.
Years ago a noted cultural geographer wrote an influential artice in which he stated that the midwest culturally begins at SYR, folks in Albany had NYC attitudes, SYR folks were closer to
NE Ohio.
I find that true, except cuseians have a slight dash of eastern brash, like a mystery spice in a secret receipe that gives them a straigh up-attitude thats a bit spicy but not unkind which I belive is unique.

I agree with your assessment. With the exception of its hilly topography, Syracuse mirrors many Great Lakes cities with the exception of Chicago and inland Madison. Northeast Ohio (Cleveland and Akron specifically) bear the closest resemblance to Syracuse. The high concentration of American made cars, comfort foods, and the inland northern dialect gives CNY a more midwestern flair. Despite these similarities, Syracusans have certain spunk that is more common in the northeast. Growing up in Westchester County, I always found the overt bluntness of downstaters to be too intense and off-putting. While Syracusan's are direct, they have a certain warmness to them that is certainly not prevalent east of the Mohawk Valley.

For me and my family, the things that persuaded us to move to central NY were (in this order): 1) Natural beauty of the landscape; 2) Sense of community in the towns; 3) Slower pace of life; 4) Lower cost of living
