I went to Heman St. and Kinne St. elementary schools before moving to the west side (off Grand Ave.) and then Fabius-Pompey... East Syracuse was lovely back then. More and more now, I see unkempt houses/lawns, what appear to be shady dealings, and am occasionally harrassed at Hanlon Park while with my three small children... whereas before, as a kid, I could walk from my home on Hazel Ave. to Heman St. Elementary without fear of any issues. I was 7, the first time I made that walk. East Syracuse isn't what it once was. I'm hoping that recent renovations of local buildings/streets will help bring the area back. Until then, I wouldn't feel right recommending it as a "safe area."
Mattydale? There are a lot of drug dealers. There are a lot of shady people in general. I have an ex boyfriend who is an ex in great part because of the things he went along with while in their company. And these weren't just a few people or a few households...
Nedrow is all right, I suppose. I'm not very familiar with it except that it's sandwiched between the South Side and the reservation, neither of which are generally maintained well. It's an area I prefer to stay out of, whenever possible.

While I understand how things used to be, things aren't the same anywhere anymore. Relative to how things are now, I still wouldn't say those areas aren't liveable. East Syracuse's issue is with rentals. They have made steps to curb rental issues and hopefully, it will improve. Mattydale depends on where you live and unfortunately, drugs are everywhere. My street, as far as I know, is fine for the most part. Nedrow, again is more working class and while they might have some issues(who doesn't), it still is a livable community for the most part. I grew up in Onondaga Hill and we had drug isses there too, but you won't hear about it like some other places. As far as I know, Onondaga Hill is one of the most desired communities in the Syracuse area and understandably so for many reasons.

Just about anywhere is liveable, I think... except for the south side and near west side... and a few blocks on the lower, near east side.
And perhaps I'm confusing where Nedrow is? Onondaga Hill is a good 5+ miles away, separated by an enormous hill, from Nedrow. Or so I thought. ??

Not really. Just go down the hill on Seneca Turnpike. take a right on Valley Drive. Then take a left on to Dorwin. Nedrow is right there. You can also go the back way by going down Cleveland Road, through the Res and either take Route 80/Valley Drive or go through the heart of the Res and go Route 11A to Route 11(South Salina Street). It's still the town of Onondaga.

It's fine. My in laws live down Route 298 from there. That area is called Carrier Circle, in which the many Hotels are off of. Nothing to worry about at all. It's also by the NY State Thruway and Erie Boulevard East. so, it's in a good location.

I hear a some totally divergent opinions about Syracuse. Some say the city is horrible and then others say it is a great city. What is the truth? Are there any cities that I may have been to that are similar? I am not going to spend a lot of time and money in the Upstate area if the city is bad.

Put all of the posts into proper perspective. There are some posters on here that have a certain view of the city, while others don't. Personally, I would still come up here and see for yourself. I interact with people from various environments here, I have family that live in various environments around here and I never have felt threatened anywhere around here, because I just mind my business and do what I got to do. It is a city with quite a bit to offer and I think some take it for granted, including myself at times. Some also do not interact with people outside of where they live and work around here. It is a major city in the US and it will have it's good and bad parts. So, just put things into perspective when dealing with this forum. I try to stay level headed and honest about things as possible. So come on up and enjoy a festival, a play, a baseball game(there is a AAA team here), go to a couple of museums, walk around the campus and so on if you are going to come in the spring or summer. That's why I give people something to run with by posting a list of things that are relevant to their question and/or topic. Here's some more information: Syracuse Chiefs: Home
List of annual events in Syracuse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Syracuse NY : Festivals and Events (I know this list is from 5 years ago, but all of these festivals occur around the same time every year and there are more)
Home
Again, if you have any specific questions just ask.
