Here's my opinion on the topic.

Summed up: great central, safe location in a crappy looking suburb

Well, the suburb isn't so bad. It's Carrier Circle itself. It needs to be spruced up, but the area isn't bad in terms of crime or anything like that, and is actually in a good location. If you go down Kinne St. towards the Franklin Park development or go East on Route 298, there are some nice housing developments on the other side of the Thruway where my in laws live. If you go even further down 298, it takes you to 481 or in to country towards Minoa, Kirkville and Bridgeport.
There are hotels in the 7th North area of Liverpool and off of South Bay Road in North Syracuse by the Airport too.

It is a city with quite a bit to offer and I think some take it for granted, including myself at times. Some also do not interact with people outside of where they live and work around here. It is a major city in the US and it will have it's good and bad parts. So, just put things into perspective when dealing with this forum. I try to stay level headed and honest about things as possible. So come on up and enjoy a festival, a play, a baseball game(there is a AAA team here), go to a couple of museums, walk around the campus and so on if you are going to come in the spring or summer. That's why I give people something to run with by posting a list of things that are relevant to their question and/or topic. Here's some more information: Syracuse Chiefs: Home
List of annual events in Syracuse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Syracuse NY : Festivals and Events (I know this list is from 5 years ago, but all of these festivals occur around the same time every year and there are more)

Again, if you have any specific questions just ask.

Thanks for the insight.

Of the hotels off 7th North I would suggest either the Gracie Inn Best Western--clean, nice staff, and affordable or the Holiday Inn (currently under renovations). When I had to come into town for business those two are where I would prefer staying. If you need room service then choose Holiday Inn

Not to get off of the topic, but does Syracuse have a lot of old architecture like other eastern cities or is it younger and Midwestern oriented?

Pretty much older architecture. You'll see a lot of it downtown and on the Syracuse University campus.

Don't know anything about you so obviously don't know your interests. That said,
as for the Adirondacks - May to November is the best season unless you like a lot of snow and very cold. There are 3 or 4 dozen mountains worth climbing and many lakes and rivers for canoeing or kayaking. In addition there are many small, quaint vacation communities including the well known Lake Placid whose olympic ski jumps are used year round. You can also take a bobsled ride down the bottom half or so of the olympic track. I suggest you contact lake Placid information if these or other similar activities grab your interest. I have boated many lakes, canoed many routes and climbed many of the mountains. I have lived in upstate NY 45 years. If you don't mind winter weather (and I don't) it as a wonderful place to live. If you want additional info send me a private message.
Have an enjoyable trip.

Here are a few other activities or locations that may interest you:
The Watkins Glen race track used by Nascar, the SCCA and other racing groups.
The many corporate and family owned wineries in the "finger lakes" region to the west and south west of Syracuse.
The Bouckville antique sale with 1000 or so antique dealers setting up to sell their wares.
The Oneida nation - casino, hotels, golf courses, annual snowmobile sno cross national races.
Oneida lake - ice fishing and annual snow mobile races
Some of the best trout fishing streams in the north east.
And travel from Buffalo to Rochester, Syracuse, Utica and Albany each one to two hours apart is made easy as the NY state thru way connects each.
In addition to Syracuse U their are other fine universities in upstate: RIT, State U at Buffalo, Cornell, Hamilton, Colgate, Ithaca college, to name a few.

To expand on this alittle more, if you enjoy racing then upstate is definitively a place you will enjoy. We boast everything from Super modifieds (at Oswego),the best dirt modified action in the US(Brewerton amongst others, to USAC, and Nascar regional series (like Owego)

Can't forget Weedsport too at the Cayuga County Fairgrounds. It might be stock cars though.
