I think the crimes are different, but stuff goes down on some North side neighborhoods. I'll put it like this; South side might be the most violent and has some "crews", West side has the "hustlers" and some violence, North side has some hustling, some prostitution and some violence and East side has some hustling and occasional shooting. Keep in mind this is in regards to the rough parts of these sides of town. That can vary in size of area and severity.

South side is probably from Adams down to Brighton is the roughest part, with it getting better as you go further south. I say Ballantyne is still the cut off and South of Seneca Turnpike is still really nice. West side is pretty much the Near West side neighborhood, which is one of the poorest neighborhoods in the country. That's South of West Fayette, East of Geddes Street, north of Bellevue and west of West Street. Not as bad as people think in terms of violence, but it still does occur. As for the North side, the area of Lodi a block north of Butternut to North Salina and a block or two west of it on streets like Townsend and McBride and Butternut from say a block east of Lodi to a couple of blocks from Grant are rough looking. Park and Pond is a few blocks from there in each direction are iffy. On the east side around the Rolling Green Estates apartments and Kennedy Square(or what was occupied when it was still around) was iffy. Keep in mind that even in most of these areas, you won't have problems if you just mind your business and most of the crime is hardly ever random.

OMG, not even comparible. I lived in Buffalo and used to have to travel to syracuse alot. I thought it was the worse downtown of any city that size. There is nothing in downtonw syracuse. Everythings boarded up, no tall buildings, no art scene. Horrible downtown. Buffalo is not perfect by any means but three times better than Syracuse. Those who are saying Syracuse is better are quite frankly lieing never been to syracuse, never been to buffalo, or very dillusional. I think Syracuse's downtown looks like a ghost town. I actually was considering moving to Syracuse at one point until I went there and seen there downtown. Was so put off. Syracuse really needs to do something and stop hating on Buffalo's downtown which is much better in every area. Trust me dont kid yourself there really not even comparible. Buffalo is much larger. I know a girl who worked with me in Buffalo who was from Syracuse and couldn't believe how much bigger downtown Buffalo was to Syracuse. I think Albany has a better downtown than Syracuse. I think it is more comparible to a slightly bigger version of Utica or something, but definately not close to Buffalo.

I can't believe that you have ever really set foot in Syracuse for you to think that. I think that you are looking at a few decent pictures from like Armory square and are assuming all of downtown syracuse is like that. I also question if you are really from Buffalo, if you are and you have been to Syracuse there is no way you would be saying what you are saying. I question your true hometown. I think you are from Syracuse, and have never been to Buffalo and are letting your sense of civic pride seriously distort your logic and reasoning.

My cousin went to college in Buffalo and couldn't wait to come back to the Syracuse area after college. She thought downtown Buffalo was depressing and scary. She wasn't a big fan of the Buffalo area in general though either....she made fun of it quite often.

You are mistaken, my brother. Syracuse actually has a pretty strong arts scene. You must not of gone down East Genesee Street to Syracuse Stage or the Everson Museum. What about Armory Square or Hanover Square, which are pretty active at night? How about enjoying a festival at Clinton Square next to the Soldiers and Sailors Mounument? Yes, Salina Street and Warren Street could be better, but let's not overexaggerate either. There are tall buildings in downtown Syracuse, by the way. Here's a great website for Downtown Syracuse:Downtown Syracuse

Why are you questioning this guy's hometown status? You're almost as bad as people that said the Obama isn't a citizen or a Muslim. Come on, man. Maybe he actually likes Downtown Syracuse.

Here's websites for both:Downtown Syracuse

Exactly...People don't even realize that there is a lot of things going on downtown. As for the spots, I understand. Actually, my brother in law and my nephew are in one of those commercials.

^^^^^^^^^^^You can say anything you want to say about downtown Syracuse. However, I have been there more times than I want to admit and I think (and trust me I was being kind the first post) it is absolutely pathetic. Doesn't come close to Buffalo. Truly nothing there and they haven't built anything new in about fifty years. Sorry pal, but I have eyes. You can say four plus four is ten all day long but I still Know its eight.

I cannot honestly think of another city the size of Syracuse with a worse downtown. That is being painfully honest. There is not even any depth to downtown Syracuse. I walked a few blocks and went around the corner and came back. It was like one long block. Now dont get me wrong, I understand your civic pride but come on man. Even Rochester is much better than Syracuse. Get realistic, go for something like Binghamton or Utica. That comparison will make you feel superior because I got to tell you, comparing yourself to Buffalo not only makes you look dellusional, silly and blind but in serious denial. Go to the Buffalo board, go to page two and click on the pictures of Buffalo. Then be honest with yourself.

If you don't want to take my word for it, you seriously need to leave the Syracuse area for a little while and go to other cities of similar size. You will see that Syracuse has been lacking growth in so many areas for so many years. Honestly ask yourself, what has Syracuse added to their downtown in the last fifty years? Then ask yourself, what has been closed or taken away in those same fifty years? Denial is not a river in Egypt..

Are we just talking about new buildings here?

Sounds to me like you are saying the following: Since Syracuse lacks a building taller than 25 stories and no new tall building built in the last 30 years...that means any downtown with tall buildings and new modern buildings is better than downtown Syracuse????

If that's what you mean, then I totally agree! Downtown Syracuse is way below par in the new and tall department. No beautiful modern looking tall buildings! No skyscrapers taller than 315 ft! It makes me sick too. That's one reason why outsiders don't respect Syracuse and why it's very difficult to have any pride in this town.

My hands are tied. I've been telling our leadership for almost 10 years now that Syracuse needs new, tall and modern buildings downtown, but no one in a leadership position agrees with me. For some reason local Syracusans are afraid of post-modern glass tall buildings! Yes, afraid!

I've given up TRYING to convince Syracuse area civic leaders what needs to be done to make Syracuse a great city again. It's pretty useless. A depression is coming anyway, so it doesn't even matter now. I doubt much new construction will be going on a year from now...unless the new administration invests in northern rust-belt cities. Which I seriously doubt.
