Or get a kid from down the street to do it for you.

If you wind up with a house with any kind of driveway you may want to hire a plow guy. We have a fellow who shows up like clockwork, does a great job and does not charge an arm and a leg. Nothing like waking up to a new snowfall and a freshly plowed drive! I shovel less here then I did back on L.I.

How expensive?

My dad swears by Ariens brand. Their stuff is made in USA (Wisconsin) and uses metal for internal components whereas other brands use plastics for some parts. They also have an excellent reliability and durability history.

My parents hired a local guy for $200/season before they bought their own plow... but they have a 1000ft. long driveway. LOL - seems like it would take too long to shovel, don't you think?

Proulxfamily, did your 'rents have an agreement with the plow guy as far as how often he would show up? We pay per plowing and sometimes I think our plow guy shows up too often. I wonder if there is the opposite problem with a yearly contract. Were your parents happy about how often the drive got plowed?

I'd say he came when there were more than 2-3 inches... but always got to everyone at some point during the morning... it was just that we KNEW he'd be there well before we had to leave if there was that much or more.
I can't remember his name but he's on Route 91, on the south side of the highest point in Pompey (just above the Mall.) Light blue house, split level, with all kinds of heavy machinery around. If I remember his name, I'll PM you. Really nice guy.

Accents

Most white collar men from the Syracuse suburbs do not have any noticeable accent IMO.
When people say there is a "Syracuse accent" I think they are speaking about the blue collar men in the area. Some city hoods also have distinct accents. I believe there is a north side accent..... which basically sounds like a man trying to talk with a tough guy attitude. I'm not sure if he consciously chooses to speak like that or if it's really an accent.

Ah...maybe it's just me but....I did not hear any accents.

This is an older thread, but since I'm about to pay my plow guy for the season...
There are so many people doing freelance seasonal plowing these days (especially with the economy the way it is, people trying to make extra money) that you shouldn't have any problem finding a reasonable rate. I pay less than $300 per season and I think it's money well spent. (I probably could find someone even cheaper, but my guy is really good and reliable)
