Perhaps Franklin Square? Small bits of Little Italy are moving in that direction as well. Marshall Street up on the SU Hill has the kinds of shops, at least, as well.
There are certain PLACES that are trendy... but not necessarily areas, except for those mentioned above. It's more... you and your trendy friends go somewhere and make it trendy. LOL
I know the billiard halls and coffee houses are pretty popular. Punk shows (even people who don't like it will go because it's "trendy") and the lounge at the Marx Hotel is another bit of variety. There's Ohm Lounge and The World Lounge downtown, in addition to the MANY bars and restaurants down there. Other favorite places for us are also Coleman's on Tipp Hill and Kitty Hoynes, The Blue Tusk, and Mully's in Armory Square.
Or at least, they were our favorite places when I had a trendier social life. Having three toddlers, my husband's odd work hours, and few people I trust to watch my children doesn't provide ample opportunity for going out much. :P
I'll have to go check those places out. Whenever I am downtown, it seems that there is very little development, and as if no buildings have been built in the past 20 years.
(It's downtown and all of the beautiful historic buildings are still down there... with the clubs built inside. Of course no new buildings have gone up. LOL - I guess that shows what a Syracusan I am. "New buildings? DOWNtown? What crazy talk is this?!!!") haha!

Yes and no. Nothing particularly _tall_ has been. The AT&T building which also houses Pascale's was built in the mid-90s (1996?). The Jefferson Clinton Commons building is in the middle of going up now.
Much more has been done with redoing buildings, partially because of the amount of vacant older stock downtown. There's much more that has plenty of potential for reuse than there is ready-to-build shovel-ready land to build new stuff on.
I would say that the Westcott neighborhood has some trendy spots too. I know they re-did the Westcott Theatre into a band venue. They have a sushi restaurant/club there too. They have a good Mexican and Spanish Caribbean restaurant too.
Westcott is very granola; not sure I'd call it trendy. It hasn't changed very much since the '60s...
(Oh, and BTW, since it's been in the news lately: Westcott Reservoir is nowhere near the Westcott neighborhood. Just so those unfamiliar with Syracuse don't ever mix them up.)
