bubblemilk is on a distinguished road
Lightbulb Camillus, NY

How is it there? in General.

Safety, communities, etc. Any information would be great! I'm considering moving there.

If it helps I'm a single, female looking for some place generally quiet and safe enough where I don't have to worry if I don't come home after sunset.

Thanks!

You shouldn't have any worries at all with Camillus safety. It's purely a suburban and rural town, although it is closer to the city of Syracuse than others. There are no "bad parts" in terms of crime. Crime tends to be teenagers joyriding and trying to break into unlocked cars from time to time. The population tends to skew older (many retirees).

Fairmount is the more suburban, built-up area. Homes are 1940s to 1980s vintage, anything from small bungalows to Cape Cods to Colonials, and on the small side. It is an older suburb, so the houses are closer together and the neighborhoods more compact. Some streets have sidewalks, some don't. You'll need a car to get around mostly, but if you live closer to Fairmount Corners you will be able to comfortably walk to drug stores or (especially if you live on the south side of West Genesee Street) the grocery store (a nice Wegmans) or the small shopping plaza (it has a Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Dick's Sporting Goods, Pet Smart and Michael's and will have a Panera soon). Fairmount has a nice, kid-oriented park with an ice rink that is easily within walking distance of residential areas. They also have a cool miniature golf course.

Fairmount also has several decent small apartment complexes that are generally quite safe.

The school district is West Genesee schools, which are well rated.

Suburban areas continue westward toward the village of Camillus; these are less "walkable" although some areas still have good walking access to the Camillus Commons plaza (WalMart, Lowes, P&C Grocery). Camillus toward the village also has a couple of apartment complexes. The houses are bigger in this direction.

Farther out to the west, Camillus becomes more rural. Some newer and bigger homes out here but it is not very built up. There is a wonderful Erie Canal park just beyond the village with miles of towpath for walking and biking, and a museum.

Fairmount and Camillus have Centro bus service to downtown. You have several options for getting to downtown - you can take the express bus, or go on West Genesee Street into city, or take the 695/690 bypass. It takes about 20 minutes to get to downtown either way during morning rush.

2 Catholic churches: Holy Family (Fairmount), St. Josephs (Camillus). There is a UCC church in Fairmount as well, a Lutheran one in Camillus, a Baptist one in Camillus. There are small libraries in Fairmount and in the village of Camillus.

It's probably not considered one of the more fashionable suburbs, but it's a pretty nice and safe place to live. The worst thing you could probably say about it, is that it's a little TOO quiet and boring.

Here are some photos of the Camillus and Fairmount areas:

You should be fine in Camillus or pretty much any of the suburban areas of Syracuse, really. Jeromeville pretty much summed it up nicely.

Camillus is nice. Some parts are better than others. For example, the Village of Camillus leaves much to be desired. The village is very small though. If you blink you'll miss it.
