how long of a bike ride would you say it is from campus to downtown? i will definitely have a bike...but i dont know how the weather will affect that.
also, im under the impression that the graduate studios are at the downtown location, but im still waiting to hear back on that.
if not, I am also looking in the area you recommended

You could bike, I suppose... but it's called SU Hill for a reason. LOL - it's pretty steep unless you bike through the near east side's projects and even then, at the end, it's still steep. To give you an idea, Upstate Medical Center and Crouse Hospital are attached. Upstate is at the bottom of the hill and Crouse is at the top. Of the same city block.
They meet at the -2nd floor of Crouse and the 5th floor of Upstate, by a short, enclosed bridge. It's very steep. In winter, a bike would not be possible.

I should also mention that Centro buses have a rack for attaching bicycles. It wasn't uncommon at all for people to bring their bikes along on the bus.

Cuse Car
A Syracuse-based company recently launched a car-sharing program that allows the use of either a Toyota Prius or Honda Civic hybrid for a flat annual fee which varies based on type of user. There is a specific package tailored towards college students.

Have you considered looking on Craigslist? You'll probably be able to find a cheaper place in a nicer area that way... and people will name areas as they're "known", kwim?

Syracuse is a lot more comfortable with a car. The buses are okay for work commuting or if you have no other options, but if you want to take advantage of the outdoor activities in upstate you'll have to drive to them. In the winter, your own transport can be a good way to keep your sanity, because you'll feel less trapped by the weather and you don't have to wait in the cold on days you don't feel like it. For instance, if you decide to learn to ski there isn't a bus. There is a car share though if you'd prefer that. The bus also is centralized downtown in a sort of spoke pattern, so it can be a pain to get some places.
Cycling to campus from downtown is easier if you take E. genesee st a couple of blocks and then hang a right at Syracuse Stage, the hill is longer but not so steep (though its still very much there). Not quite through the projects.

Clarendon Heights, Hidden Valley and Carriage House are in Outer Comstock, near South Campus. They're also, if I recall correctly, on a bus line straight to campus (SU-Nob Hill?), and are popular choices for grad students. You may also want to look at Vincent Apartments, on Smith Lane, another popular grad student complex.
Maplewood Garden is a little dated but otherwise OK complex about 1.5-2 mi east of campus. There's a bus line (SU-Drumlins) that runs about two blocks from there along Nottingham Road.

My sister lives in Clarendon Heights and loves it. It's a nice complex close to campus and the Nob Hill bus does go by there.
Actually, all of those apartment complexes are pretty good and are pretty close to campus.
Syracuse University's School of Architecture moved back into Slocum Hall, after 2 years of renovations. They were located at the Warehouse in Downtown across from Armory Square.
Buses stop right by the building on College Place. So, it's in a good spot on campus.
Like someone had mentioned, I would try the University/Westcott area too. There's a nice little business district on Westcott Street and it is a straight shot down Euclid Avenue to campus. Thorden Park is right there, as is Barry Park going south down Westcott street. You also have a smaller park in the nearby Outer Comstock area in Comfort Tyler Park.

Wow...thanks so much thats a ton of great info!
Looks like my decision has been made for me, as I found out that Syracuse architecture gives all their grad students major scholarships after the 1st year, and I was accepted with advanced standing so I dont have to take everything over again.
Also, most likely my girlfriend (likely to be fiancee once we get settled) will be moving in with me once she finishes her student teaching this december, so that will help with rent, etc. She is going to get a job teaching SPED most likely so that she can gain instate tuition when she goes to grad school in a year or 2...any recommendations on schools? I dont really know how it all works, I know she may not have much of a choice, especially going in mid-year, but little info never hurts...
thanks again everyone for all the great advice!
