Good Luck with your move. I do hope you get your chance at NYC too, but I'm sure you'll enjoy your time in Syracuse. Enjoy the grad program!

Jumping back in-
I was looking at the Craigslist listings for apts., as if I was in your position, and something came to mind. When you're looking in the University area and find an apartment, look up the address on a map. If it's north of East Genesee St., keep looking. You want to stay south of "East Genny", up on the hill, and even then, up as high as possible (near Euclid, which runs parallel to Genesee Street but centered on top, nearer the campus). I'm not saying AT ALL that East Genesee Street is sketchy (because there are many grand old homes on that strip, on the Dewitt side especially) ... it's just that the further down you go, the worse the neighborhoods become.

True, as you get north of East Genesee on Westcott, you are about 2 or 3 blocks from the projects(Rolling Green Estates Apartments). It's not as bad as some parts of town, but as far as living there, it is iffy.

Ok, so Im finally getting everything ready to move, and Ive narrowed my apartment search to a place on Walnut Ave ($590), Carriage House ($470), and Clarendon Heights. Anyone know which of these would be best for me...I will be without a car, and so I would guess the best place would be the closest walking distance to campus and other bus routes. How are those areas as far as safety, proxemity to other activities and stuff?

I would go with Walnut Ave. You would be close to Marshall Street, which is a nice and cute business district. You'll also be within walking distance of the campus and the area is generally safe. Just be smart anywhere you might walk. There are buses you can catch on campus at College Place and possibly on Waverly, but don't quote me on the latter. I work at SU with DPS, so if you have any other questions, just let me know.

I misread...the Walnut place is actually on 1327 E. Geneesee. Also, I found a place on Livingston Ave....its only 2 blocks from Slocum Hall. How are these areas?

It's the area's "student ghetto." You'll be surrounded by college students mostly; the neighborhood association is trying to prevent further creation of rentals over there to limited success. It's very very close; very short walking distance.
Actually, you'd probably do well to check with SU's Office of Orientation and Off Campus Programs and see if they have anything on the landlord. They maintain a landlord file of sorts with student praise/problem reports. http://oocp.syr.edu

Livingston turned out to be not what I was looking for after talking to the manager. Im now looking at either the Geneesee studio, which is primarily graduate architecture tenants, or Jefferson Tower, which I just discovered, but I dont really know much about it or its area, it just has good reviews on a few sites. Any opinions?

I know as far as safety, Clarendon Heights isn't bad. My younger sister lives there and likes it. She hasn't had any problems from what I know.
That studio on East Genesee should be fine too. It's a bit of a wlak to Slocum, but it's doable. I know there is the Warehouse Bus that stops at Syracuse Stage and you might be able to catch it to campus.
Not sure about Jefferson Tower, but it's in Downtown and is just on the other side of I-81 from campus. Here's more on the building: The Sutton Companies | Jefferson Tower Apartments
