Groundbreaking for $2.4 million Kirk Hotel Redevelopment

A Downtown Syracuse landmark that once served as a hotel and in more recent years a seedy rooming house is undergoing a significant renovation. A developer with financial assistance from the state will transform the building's upper floors into market rate housing units and convert the existing ground floor tavern into a full service restaurant. Due to the building's historic nature, the rehab will preserve many of its original architectural features. An underutilized adjacent building will be renovated with housing units and retail on the first floor. While the project at nearly $2.5 million is relatively modest, it will hopefully spark redevelopment and gentrificaton of several neighboring buildings that are heavily vacant or underutilized.

This building reminds me of the architecture in New Orleans' French Quarter.

Here is the Post-Standard article:
Renovation begins of key downtown building

Mich. Boat Maker Opens First Northeast Showroom in Downtown Syracuse

A manufacturer of upscale wooden boats based near Grands Rapids, MI announced it will open its Syracuse showroom, the company's first in the Northeast on May 6. Lakeland Boatworks selected Syracuse due to its affordable office rents and proximity to major boating destinations including the Finger Lakes, Adirondacks, and Lake Ontario. The company hired Long Island-based Horst Design International (HDI) to redevelop a 4,000 square foot former bank branch at 499 South Warren Street to serve as the new retail location. According to its website, HDI has designed retail locations for Bloomingdales, Dicks Sporting Goods, Eastern Mountain Sports, and Macys.

Masonic Lofts Renovation

I found a good website that shows the end result of the Masonic Lofts renovation on Montgomery Street in Downtown Syracuse. Monahan Development purchased the former Masonic Lodge which had sat vacant for over 20 years and converted the building into 31 apartments, with a good portion being live/work units designed for artists or entrepreneurs. Some apartments are as large as 3,000 square feet. Since the developer no longer has a website, it was difficult to see the finished product.

It looks nice. I drove by that part of Montgomery today and that area looks like it is coming along in a good way.

The Downtown Committee's April newsletter shows a revised rendering of the O'Brien & Gere headquarters building that is slated to begin construction shortly. Although this multi-tenant office building is still low-rise, it appears the number of floors has been increased from 5 to 6. While the changes aren't sweeping and that strange brick scheme remains, the left portion of the building at the intersection of Washington Street looks much better with glass windows and a similar colored facade.

I work next door and they have the whole area fenced off. Can't wait to see what it looks like when it is finished. Hopefully it will help the skyline.

SU Partners with IBM to Design "Green" Data Center at South Campus Research Park

Syracuse University has engaged IBM to develop one of the world's most energy efficient data centers. The $14 million facility will be the first tenant at the university's south campus research park.

Here is the article from the Post-Standard:
Syracuse University builds 'green' data center - syracuse.com

Does anyone know the status of the Umbilical Cord Blood Bank Center that was slated to be developed in Syracuse. According to a 2007 article in the Post-Standard, the state senate, assembly, and governor had committed money and a location inside SU's research park was almost a done deal. DeFrancisco who had championed this cause by taking credit for securing money, has been noticeably silent lately. Did this project fall through?
