Ah, that is huge. $8+ million in public money could see $30+ in private investment in that neighborhood in the next decade. Thanks for the links, Rolls.

Upstate is a building the biotech center and it should be ready in 2011.
Upstate is also building a cancer center, teaching/ambulatory center, and a possible new nursing building! Most of these buildings should be ready by 2012!
It is also expanding the Institute for Human Performance and hopefully with Kimatian's win for mayor Upstate will buy the Syracuse School District Building and turn that into something!!
I encourage you to check out Kimatian on the issues. I am liberal and even though Kimatian is a republican, I definitely agree with him on many issues for economic development in the community. Miner is too political!
Also, Crouse is building a new surgery center and St. Joe's is building a state of the art ER!!! Very exciting stuff in healthcare here!!
I toured through Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital and it was breathtaking!!!

I agree with your take on Kimitian and Miner. Unfortunately, it will be challenging for Kimiatian due to the city's overwhelmingly democratic majority in party enrollment. He can get crossover votes, however he will need better exposure and financial support to counteract Miner's overwhelming support among unions, human service, and other not-for-profit type workers. Otis and his big ego will also siphon some votes from Kimiatian as well as Miner if he is secures a portion of the black vote. If I lived in the city I would gladly support Kimiatian.
Do you know if the Cancer Center has secured enough state funding? It is on schedule? Has an architect been chosen? Does the Cancer Center strive to attract researchers like Roswell Park in Buffalo? Syracuse would be wise to emulate Cleveland and Pittsburgh which have successfully attracted top notch surgeons and specialists. Not only does the influx of high paid researchers and doctors increase the intellectual capital and geographic diversity of a community, it also helps the highend segment of the real estate market as well as the arts and other businesses that cater to the upper middle class and affluent. The relocation of doctors and other medical personnel would help stabilize and potentially increase the areas's population and enrollment in local school districts. The success of the Cleveland Clinic and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has lead to an increase in medical tourists who contribute to the local economy by staying in hotels, eating at restaurants, and other ancillary businesses. For far too long, the state has not adequately supported SUNY Upstate and has instead concentrated its finite resources on spearheading research and other programs at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, SUNY Stony Brook, and SUNY Buffalo.
I think the best hope for Syracuse will be the biotech and cancer centers. Expanding the Institute of Human Performance should also elevate the stature of the local medical community. Hopefully these buildings will have attractive designs.

Yeah, I don't know if I'm comfortable politicking, but I'd second that encouragement of researching Mr. Kimatian. While I don't consider Miner overly political, per se, I do find her to be wholly lacking in vision. I appreciate her resistance to the Great Destiny Scam, but outside of that, she doesn't bring a ton to the table. Red or blue, let's roll the dice with the Republican fellow (I'm another Democrat who's happy to cross over for the superior candidate).
Syracuser, any specifics on the cancer center, ambulatory center, or IHP? Namely, location of the first two, and details of the IHP expansion? I've seen stories with passing references to those projects; I'm interested to see how they'll fit into the city fabric (and if Upstate continues its hot streak with fresh architecture).

I agree with you 100% RollsRoyce - Upstate wants to attract top notch researchers and physicians, but its very difficult when the state keeps cutting the budget for SUNY schools, professionals who rely on funding for their research do not want to work in a volatile environment. Upstate has lost many prominent researchers due to funding issues. They hope that the new Childrens Hospital will attrach more people.
The Cancer center will be next to the Regional Oncology Center - they will fill up the space in the parking lot and I guess they will connect it with the existing center. The cancer center is supposed to be an "LEED silver building" The ambulatory care teaching clinic will be across adams streets next to the new parking garage where they currently have an open parking lot. Both facilities should be ready in 2012.
The expansion of the IHP will take place in the back of the building - they purposely left room there for the future - that will be ready in 2012 as well.
They are also going to begin in 2010 a redevelopment of Harrison and Townsend towers and the University health care complex in between. I am pretty sure they are building a new student life center there too. The towers will house students and medical residents. Currently this area is pretty run down, so this is exciting!! I think this will take many years to complete (~2018)
A new heart center is also going to be completed in 2010 in Upstate University Hospital.
The biotech center should be ready by the end of 2010 -it is also an LEED silver buidling. They plan to develop the rest of the 8 acres with a mix of private entities and this should be completed by 2015.
Also, a Bone and Joint Center in Dewitt should be completed by the end of this year!
Very exciting stuff, b/c they secured capital money a couple of years back, but they are going through some horrible budget cuts right now! So call your local congress person!
The last thing NYS should cut is things that save lives.

Syracuser- Thanks for the update! Today, Governor Patterson is scheduled to announce more than $3 billion in cuts to the NYS budget. I hope these proposed cuts will not impact the projects you have mentioned. In order to attract professional jobs, new residents, and commerce, Syracuse must have top notch medical care that is on par with other Tier 2 metro areas. Hopefully the Children's Hospital will make efforts to recruit pediatric specialists easier. Tapping into stem cell research could also be a boon for the area as it would attract physicians and researchers.
