Hi everyone. I'm new to both this site as well as the Syracuse area. My husband and I just bought a charming old house (1940) in the 'Cuse/Dewitt area. We moved here from Saratoga Springs, NY where my husband had been working while in the Navy. He just got out and will be working for a power plant in Oswego starting in May- I know, a hell of a commute, but we wanted to be near the city.

The reason for my post is I have two small children (2 years and 7 months) and I'm looking for some suggestions for nursery schools in the area. We would love either a Waldorf or Montessori inspired place or something with a bit more of a progressive feel.

I'm also interested in joining a mom's club of sorts if one exists. Also, does anyone know of a place where I could send my kids for only a few hours once or twice a week? I currently stay home with our kids so I don't need a full time daycare center. I would really love to have one or two morning per week to do errands and such. We don't have any family or friends (yet) in the area, so I can't really ask anyone to sit for my kids.

Thanks in advance for any information that you can share! Enjoy this beautiful weather... I can't imagine it will last!

Jowonio, right down the street from you on East Genesee Street, is extremely popular. Jowonio School

There are MANY mom groups on www.meetup.com to choose from, both for moms and for whatever other activities/hobbies/interests you'd like to be a part of. Welcome to Syracuse!

I agree with proulxfamily that Jowonio school is very good. I believe it has a waiting list

Another preschool for consideration is the Bernice M. Wright Nursery school Bernice M. Wright Child Development Laboratory School - College of Human Ecology (http://hshp.syr.edu/schools/cfs/bernice/ - broken link) Considered to be an excellent nursery school but does have a waiting list

There is a Montessori school in syracuse Montessori School of Syracuse > Home I don't know much about this school and haven't heard too much about their preschool so I can't tell you much about it.

All three of these schools are located very close to the Dewitt/Syracuse border but lye within the city of Syracuse so they shouldn't be too hard to get to if your are living in Dewitt

I know of a couple of mothers who enjoy "mother's Day Out" Mother's Day Out This is a program that lets you drop your kids off for just a few hours once or twice a week.

And MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) Welcome to MOPS A program that lets you connect with other mothers

Both of these are offered at Eastern Hills Bible Church in Manlius (not far from Dewitt) Eastern Hills Bible Church But I believe you do not need to attend the church in order to participate in either MOPS or Mother's Day Out

Good Luck and Welcome to Syracuse

St. Ann's Parish has an outstanding Nursery school. I highly recommend it! It's located in Syracuse.

Default An update to our nursery school search

I just wanted to thank everyone who responded to my question about nursery schools in the Syracuse area. After researching many schools, we decided on the Jowonio school. My daughter attends two mornings per week and absolutely loves it. The school is inclusive, meaning both children who are typically developing and children with special needs can attend. Although my daughter doesn't have special needs, I believe that all children benefit from the diversity of the school as well as all the the support staff and excellent programs. I plan on sending my younger daughter next year.

Cool. My daughter goes there now and I might send her younger brother there too.
