There seem to be plenty of folks in this forum who understand Syracuse - both its strengths and weaknesses

I think upper East Fayette seems just fine and I'm particularly impressed by the work Housing Vision Unlimited has done with the whole stretch of East Fayette from Cherry to Pine St.

The original poster - if still considering the towers apartments adjacent to then highway and the hospital - now has a new factor in the mix. The state announced yesterday that it's moving all the remaining tenants out of Townsend Towers and Harrison House. Both of those buildings have had high vacancy rates and some ongoing issues with drug dealing and crime in general. Upstate Hospital is planning to work with the state to turn those two buildings into housing for faculty and med students - great idea and it will stabilize that area.
I also agree about the people who make comments on that certain website. Anytime I read an article that shows something positive about the city I will look to see comments that people post. I have been disgusted by how nasty people get on that site. For example just the other day I was reading this article Couple ditches Fayetteville for struggling Near West Side neighborhood in Syracuse - syracuse.com about suburbanites who chose to move into the city. The comments that people left after the article were primarily negative and hateful in nature. I'm just glad that none of those people leaving comments like that are my neighbors!

That is a good example and how dare that couple for moving into a neighborhood that they want to help improve.

stjaragorn is on a distinguished road
Default place to rent

there is an area in syracuse called Sedgwick where the homes are historical and the neighborhood safe - its really close to SU and you can rent a flat for less than an apartment
check cragislist for postings its tough to find availability sometimes but if you're a graduate student and don't want the chaos that usually comes with undergrad places, then this is a great option
