Moving to Syracuse!
Hey all, I'm so glad to have found this site!
I'm moving from Honolulu to Syracuse next month, probably the week of July 20th, although that's not set in stone. I'm accepting a job with a new company that is right by the airport, so technically in North Syracuse. They will be putting me up for a month in an extended stay hotel until I can find a place of my own.
I have 2 small dogs, so that's the main issue with finding housing. I would really like to live in a small house if at all possible. My ideal place is 2 bedroom (or more), fireplace, hardwood floors, and fenced in yard. I know getting all of that will be hard to find, so the main thing I want is a fenced in yard. I really can't go over $900 a month. The lower the better!
Are there any good sources for finding places? I've always used Craigslist, but wanted to expand my options. Rent.com and Apartments.com are probably out because those are mainly for apartment complexes. Does anyone know of any searches or realtors or anything I can use?
Any info on areas would be great too! I want to stay out of the "city" areas, I've had enough of that living in Hawaii. So I'm probably looking at places like North Syracuse, Liverpool, and Cicero. I don't mind being within city bounds as long as it's not city type (lots of buildings/traffic, no grass etc). I'm thinking Northside or East Syracuse would be good considering where my work is (at the airport). I'm only 24, so any "young" areas, while not being party areas are good too.
Any other advice for someone that hasn't lived in snow for about 7 years would be great! Thanks so much!!!

In my opinion, North Syracuse is better than East Syracuse... some people probably won't agree with that though. And since you'll be working at the airport, if you live in North Syracuse, you are only about 5 minutes from the airport. East Syracuse is about 15 minutes away from the airport.
There aren't really any young "hip" areas in the suburbs of Syracuse.
Loads of small homes in Mattydale, North Syracuse, Galeville, and the Pitcher Hill areas. The only downside to these neighborhoods with really small homes is they tend to attract less than desirable neighbors. I know someone who lives in Galeville. Her neighborhood went from mostly retired older adults and elderly couples in the 1990s to.... Syracuse University students, a loud large family who immigrated here from Bosnia, a trashy family that doesn't maintain the property.....you get the picture. I can hardly believe the stories I've heard and all the changes that has occurred in last couple years. All I have to say is the 2010 census should be interesting for the Town of Salina!
Well, at least with all the large families taking over homes where elderly couples used to live, the population in Salina should see an increase for the first time since the 1970s.

Thanks for the response! The more research I do, the more I think I may just have to go with an apartment complex. That seems like the best way to find a 2 bedroom that allows dogs, without all those crappy neighbors. And it will keep me away from the partying University students as well. I like to go have fun on occassion, but don't like it to come home with me! I've seen alot of petfriendly apartments in Liverpool, so I may explore those options once I'm there.Do the suburbs normally have neighborhood bar type places? I'm not really into dance clubs, but love to find a good neighborhood bar to hang out at.As for going out in town... what are oneway costs for a cab? And is there a bus system that goes out to the suburbs? If I do decide to go out in Syracuse, I won't want to drive there, that's for sure. Thanks again!

Becca- there are plenty of nice neighborhood pubs/bars...
As far as living quarters, I think you'll be happy with Liverpool, only about 10-15 minutes from the airport.
The Centro bus does go out to the burbs, especially to the Liverpool area since a large population lives there...
I hope you are happy here..it's a far cry from Hawaii, especially in the winter....

Thanks
It's going to be a big move and a huge change, but the job offer was something I would be absolutely insane if I passed up. Plus I have family all around NY state. All of my family is on the east coast of the US, so I've got no one out here on the island with me... not even on the west coast. I'm glad I had the opportunity to live here, but it's time for me to go on to bigger and better things!
What are fun things to do during the winter? Besides things like skiing/snowboarding... I mean like every day type things.

Well....city neighborhoods that might fit you are Tipperary Hill/Far Westside, the neighborhoods around Syracuse University like Westcott, University, Outer Comstock and Meadowbrook. Eastwood might be another part fo the city to consider as well.
Since your job would be in the Northern suburbs, the older suburban areas like Mattydale, Galeville, Pitcher Hill and Lyncourt wouldn't be bad. I live in one of them and while it is more middle to working class in those suburbs, they aren't unsafe or anything like that. There a lot of older people in each of them and some families aren't as affluent as families possibly in other suburban areas.
I think a lot of people sleep on the Village of Liverpool, because while it only has about 2600 people, it is a nice and very walkable village with a supermarket, library, parks, restaurants and even a few bars/pubs right there.
North Syracuse is a bigger village that is still pretty walkable to consider too.

If I worked in North Syracuse, I'd look on Craigslist for a private residence's rental in the Village of Liverpool. It's fairly quaint, close to everything, and you have Onondaga Lake Park *right there.*

Not all streets or neighborhoods have low class neighbors, but there are plenty of places that do. Just wanted you to be aware of that.
Of the places with an older housing stock, the Village of Liverpool is the probably the best in the northern suburbs.
And as proulxfamily pointed Onondaga Lake Park is very close to Liverpool. Great place to walk or jog etc. from April to November. You'll run into many young people there too. Onondaga Lake Park is like Syracuse's Central Park....

Thanks for all the great advice and links everyone!!!
When I moved to Hawaii, I had never been here before and had to find a place with roommates before I got here. Moving to Syracuse, I'll be set for a month and will have time to browse around and see the different areas. I've just always liked suburbs more than cities. Even though I'm not directly in downtown Honolulu, it's still just too much of a city for me.
I've heard that Onondaga is a happening place... it's such a shame that the lake is polluted so much! I would love to have a place like that to cool off. Oh well!
I'm glad I'm moving in the summer, at least this way I can ease into everything. I'm going to have to find some winter hobbies!!

and it's just a quick ride down Vine St./Taft Rd. from the Airport too.
