Default Commute from Syracuse to Oswego

Does anyone commute from Syracuse to Oswego or the other way around?
I'm relocating from the west coast by mid September and I wanted to live by Syracuse, but my job is in Oswego. I'm mostly concerned about winter commute. Is it doable?

How essential is it that you be at your job every day? There are going to be times when you just cannot get up there... the snow up there is severe, much more so than Syracuse. There tend to be bands of lake effect snow that hover over the area right at Route 31 in Clay and another over Oswego.

Personally, I'd live in Clay and commute a half hour. You'd be about 15-20 minutes from downtown Syracuse and Clay is *very* active these days... you may not need to leave it at all.

From downtown Syracuse to downtown Oswego is perhaps an hour with traffic at most and there are most likely no more than a handful of days (3 to 5 at most and some years only 1 or 2) where portions of Rte 81 or Rte 481 are closed for all or part of the day due to weather issues.

If you're really nervous about driving in snowy conditions then it's not a good but it can be and is done. I had neighbors some years ago - a couple who taught at SUNY Cortland and SUNY Oswego. They lived in the middle and commuted 3x to 4x times per week for years.

It's not uncommon for people to commute between the two. Most will be commuting from Oswego to Syracuse due to the lack of jobs in the former. People from Oswego know how to drive in severe snow.

Seeing as how you're coming from a place where you don't have to deal with this why don't you just live in Oswego and save two hours every day? If the weather is really bad it can take 2-3-4 hours to make the trip each way. Much better to hit Syracuse on the weekend when you don't have to make a schedule. Oswego is beautiful right on the water with a small city feel and there's tons to do.

There might be a couple Trailways buses each day but not what you might think of as "public transportation if you're coming from a major metro area. A college student at SUNY Oswego might visit a friend at SU by that means but as a way to commute it's not practical.

I believe CENTRO has a shuttle that goes from SUNY Oswego to Downtown, but I'm not sure how frequent it is. Check here:http://www.centro.org/webpdf/oswego.aspx

Also, I agree with people saying to look at living in Clay. Baldwinsville would also be a good option too.
