There are two more in the village of Manlius... I keep forgetting about them until I drive by. Will get the numbers up this weekend.

Looking for place in Syracuse and surrounding area
Well I'm looking for some place closer(preferrably within 1-5 miles) to downtown Syracuse but wouldn't mind exploring further area. I'm looking for either 1 bedroom, studio, or efficiency within distance to supermarket would be nice. I've been reading Syracuse forum for awhile since I know I will be moving there. I'm really excited to be part of this city!
looking to read your response and others, thanks proulxfamily

I think you'll really enjoy it here once you are settled in

I assume there was a typo and you mean that you'd like to live close to downtown and within walking distance to a grocery store.
*Village of Liverpool - Nichols, a mom and pop but doesn't have bad prices
*Village of Manlius - P&C
*Dewitt, on or around East Genesee Street (house numbers around approx. #4000 since the street is extremely long- perhaps 100 miles or more?) - P&C
*Village of East Syracuse - Wegman's
Having a family and extended family in Cazenovia/Fabius/Pompey, I prefer Manlius.
If I wanted to have quick access to downtown and be close to pretty much everything, I'd choose Liverpool. If it weren't for the schools, I might live there anyway... love the village of Liverpool. The schools aren't bad, just not the "flavor" of academia we prefer. Nichols is right in the village (the best meat and prices in town!) and Wegman's is a ride down Vine Street to Taft... technically walkable but wouldn't be pleasant.
To be close to SU and downtown, there's Dewitt. I used to live in one of the apartments at Coleman Florist on East Genesee and it was REALLY convenient. A few bus lines go right by and it's easy to walk to places on Erie Blvd. Churches, synagogues, P&C grocery store, Shoppingtown Mall, the laundromat, shops, etc. are within easy walking distance. Perhaps even call Coleman Florist and ask if they happen to have anything available. The layout of the apartments (a three level efficiency, GORGEOUS one bedroom and a two bedroom that probably is still occupied) is a little odd but the value cannot be beat, especially since all utilities are included. There are two bus stops across the street, on either side of the Jewish Home grounds. A HUGE cemetery is next door and it's just like a beautiful park... loved going over there to sit beside the brook and walk around to read headstones. lol
East Syracuse- last choice, every time. It's a formerly great suburb that has been decaying for the past 15 years. It's yucky, in general, for lack of a better term... but not unsafe. At all. Very convenient to everything. Wegmans is in walking distance.
All four communities are on the busline as well. www.centro.org

I would choose the East side of the city (not the suburb). There is a P&C grocery store, drug store, bank, gas station, and Bagel shop all nearby. I used to walk or ride my bike to all of these. Plus they should begin working on the connective corridor sometime in the near future which will directly connect the East side to downtown. This will make it even easier to get to downtown.

I was thinking about the area around Nottingham Road and Broad Street on the East side close to DeWitt too. Very nice area and close not only to the places you mentioned, but also SU, the Westcott Business District and a few of parks as well.

I was thinking of those places and I understand what you are talking about with L'pool schools(very big HS) and East Syracuse(always has been very blue collar, but is about half rentals now with quite bit of turnover).
You might be able to do Eastwood, with it's own Business District and close proximity to the Shop City P&C and the East Syracuse Wegmans. It's Main St. is getting revamped in spots. So, things are looking up, as long as they continue doing what they are doing.
Another place that people don't think about, but has become more walkable is Onondaga Hill. There are some apartments right in the middle of the community and there is a Big M Supermarket there as well(that closes at 9 PM though). You have the Community College, churches, banks, a library, a post office, the middle school for the very good Westhill SD, Community General Hospital, bus lines, a Dunkin Donuts, a Byrne Dairy, a park, a couple of gas stations and a little plaza. It's close to the city of Syracuse, but very safe and quiet. So, have the close proximity, but the almost ruralish suburban feel with the community as well. 13215 is the zip for Onondaga Hill, by the way.
There are also some apartments in the area around Western Lights Plaza on West Onondaga St./Onondaga Boulevard too. There's a Wegmans and a Price Chopper in that area with a few other stores as well. There is a bus line that goes through there as well.
Here are some good sites to look for rentals: MapsKrieg - Apartments & Housing For Rent in Syracuse, NY
Syracuse Apartments for Rent | Apartment Finder
