Indeed it is. I think there are homes close to there on the last block of Ackerman at the top of the hill and also a few on Westminster Terrace that are larger and may have more amenities but is indeed a nice neighborhood. easy walking distance to the food co-op.... the walking trails at Barry Park etc.

My husband and I will be moving to the Syracuse area in August, and I am in need of advice as to where to purchase a home. Our children are all off to college so there is no need to move to the suburbs for that suburban lifestyle, although we want a decent school district for resale value. We are hoping to live in an area that is close to activities, local shopping, churches, library, and, most importantly, green spaces to walk. Also, we do NOT want acreage, but need a yard large enough for our dog and my occasional desire to garden. I have read other posts and have seen a number of neighborhoods mentioned as desirable, such as, Sedgwick Farms, Strathmore, Lincoln Hill, Tipperery Hill, Berkeley Park, and Scottholm. I have also heard positive comments on Onondaga Hill. Our price range is up to about $450,000 - give or take.

So, in your opinion, if you had that amount of money to spend on a home and wanted a quaint, walkable, safe, pretty neighborhood to live in with charming old homes, where would it be?

Jamesville, while nice and has cute little business area(somewhat), doesn't have some of the other things that the OP wants.

Here are some other choices in your price range. Although the first listing is a 1980s contemporary, it's situated in an east side neighborhood comprised of mostl 1920s to 1940s homes. The hilly location provides for great exercise:

Here are some older historic homes in the village of Fayetteville. Although the commute would be longer, Fayetteville-Manlius is one of the region's most sought after school districts. Fayetteville is a very walkable village and is home to numerous churches and has several popular restaurants. A typical commute from Fayetteville to Liverpool shouldn't take more than 30 minutes in rush hour traffic.

I think Shirley Rd, Standish, Bradford, Brookford, Hurlburt - are all great choices and close to one another in an area that is convenient to SU, the major hospitals complex and a short driver to Wegmans etc.

The property described as "striking 1 1/2 story tudor style home" at 215 Manor Drive is a mixed bag. I was inside the house a few months ago when the contents of the late owner were auctioned off. I've long admired that home from driving by. But the landscaping needs a tremendous amount work and the kitchen was updated to what was then state of the art perhaps in the 70's or mid 80's but most folks would want to redo it at this point.

Although it is not on the common lists of houses attributed to Wellington Ward - I am under the impression that it's his work. The floor plan is unusual and very open for a house of that era and the design is... uhhh... interesting. It's worth a visit to see for yourself. I've been in many Ward houses, the majority of which I think I'd enjoy owning and living in but this is not one of them.

Much of his work has classic Arts & Crafts era details with floor plans and features that were quite innovative at the time - as well as a distinct aesthetic that becomes fairly easy to recognize once you've been in some Ward homes.

Hi All,

I want to thank all for you for your input. You have all gone above and beyond what I was expecting. I have especially enjoyed seeing the photos by RollsRoyce and his (her?) commentary along with phaelon56's comments on the homes. I have seen pictures of most, but the comments really are a big help. I was wondering what was the deal with the home on Manor dr., and I agree that the homes on Shirley and Standish look to be the most promising.

looking at the listings, the house currently for sale at 212 standish seems perfect; its that rare house where the owner has preserved what deserves to be, and updated they key parts. i especially love how the bathrooms have been preserved, while not being grody... a rare thing indeed. if you're a fan of the house, definitely go for it!

I have a young (30's) colleague who lived on Standish for several years and loved it. His wife insisted that they move to a nice area of Liverpool before their children started school (public schools in Liverpool are much better than in Syracuse although it wasn't always that way). He's been out in Liverpool for five years how and says he still misses the house on Standish.
