I would definitely avoid the Bronx. The only nice area would be Riverdale and perhaps Spuyten Duvail (sp?), however both areas lack religious and ethnic diversity as they are mostly devout Jewish. Last year, while walking on East 86st, I was called a "WASP" by a 5 year old kid passing by with his mother. I would recommend Hoboken due to the large number of young professionals and easy access to NYC.
Regarding attractive women, I wish Syracuse could retain more of its blondes. It seems that most of the women who stay in the area have very dark hair. Although many of the girls in SoCal and Vegas are fake, at least there are more blondes to choose from.

You don't anything to worry about. Just take your time driving and you will be alright. I work at SU. So, if you have any questions, just ask.
As for the beaches, people go to Oneida Shores, Green Lakes, Jamesville Beach, Sylvan Beach, Fair Haven in Oswego County and Brennan Beach, among others.
Besides Armory Square, you might like the Westcott area, Marshall Street and maybe some of the businesses in "Little Italy". You might like to check out the Tipperary Hill area too.
We have plenty of festivals during the spring, summer and early fall. So, there is always something going on. There are plenty of parks to enjoy too.

Good point!
I'm not sure this holds true for the whole Syracuse area.... just thought I'd mention something I've noticed. Up here in the northern burbs I've noticed that many of the attractive women still left in the area over 23 years of age and under 35 are tall....5 ft 7 or taller. For me...someone who is 5 ft 9.....that is just too tall. An ideal height is 5 ft 4 for a women IMO.

Is the Fordham University area bad? I'm Jewish, but basically reform.

Cool. There's a lot of places to go relax at lakes.
Oh yeah. We ate at Cosmo's Pizza on Marshall St. cus that's where my mom always ate and she was really happy that it was still there. LOL. Marshall St. is pretty cool. I've never been to a Little Italy before. Is anyone familiar with Silverlake, Venice Beach, or Haight-Ashbury? I like areas like that for entertainment and socializing and eating and shopping purposes.
And wow, that's a lot of links. Haha. I'll check em out soon.

I have been to Venice Beach but not Haight-Ashbury, my wife wants to visit there but having grown up in the height of the metal scene back in the late 80's early 90's I grew to dislike more things that are hippie in orientation and that way of thinking has followed me, so the mecca of hippie culture does nothing for me.
I think you'll like the area very much, there is stuff to do--especially in Campus area. Theres a good cross section of life there--you'll find alot of people from CT, etc

Due to the presence of the university and Fordham Prep (a large catholic high school with many suburban students), I would say its pretty safe during the day, however it is not such a great area overall. Regarding Riverdale, I didn't mean to imply that the area's large jewish concentration was a bad thing. Having distant relatives that live there, I am almost certain that secular jews (reform and even conservative) as well as catholics and protestants would be in the minority.
Syracuse is home to the eighth oldest reform synogogue in the country. Temple Concord is an architectural marvel located within walking distance of the university on Madison Street. Temple Concord, Syracuse, NY - Home

I just remember driving down a street (Fraternity Row I believe) and looking up a steep hill. Then I realized that street doesn't have stop sign. I put it together and came to the conclusion that there's not stop sign there because in the winter the cars just slide down the hill and can't stop. Does that happen?
And is Armory Square actually nice now? My mom went there a while ago and she said it was nothing, but I read that it is now a popular destination for locasl. Is it fun for college aged kids? Where else do they hang out?

I grew up in the NYC area, however my mother is originally from Central New York and went to SU. Apparently, Armory Square was a very seedy and rundown area home to meatpacking plants, sketchy bars, and other social ills. According to news accounts that I've read, several urban pioneers started redeveloping derelict buildings for art galleries, boutiques and restaurants in the 1980s. In the early 1990s, Center Armory, a mixed-use complex was developed with retail and condos that now anchor the district. Construction was recently completed on a new office building and upscale condos. Although the neighborhood is more popular with twenty somethings, there are many students that venture to the clubs, bars, and shops during the weekend. Several years ago, SU purchased a vacant warehouse that is now home to their Visual and Performing Arts School. The Warehouse
Armory Square has quite a few boutiques that specialize in more trendy clothing that shop owners purchase in NYC. There is even a rumor that Urban Outfitters is looking for space in Armory Square.
Having also grown up in a major metro area, I decided to go to college in CNY due to the slower pace of life and more down-to-earth mentality of local residents. Having grandparents in Fayetteville also made the adjustment much easier. Although NYC is a truely dynamic city and offers many opportunities, Syracuse strikes a nice balance of culture, affordability, and recreation. As someone who currently works in Lower Manhattan, I would have found going to college in NYC too distracting.

Snow in Syracuse is so over rated its not even funny. First of all you hear we get a lot of snow, which is true but we get it all at once. If it snows in one day then it snows a lot. But most of the time it doesn't really snow especially if its really cold out. Most of the time it doesn't even start snowing until late November early December and ends in March. Last year or two years ago we didn't even have snow on Christmas you could see the grass still out. Last year the last time we had snow was mid February. The only time you would have trouble in the snow is if you drive a stick and your on the hill. When you start out in first gear you probably will slip.
