The problem with the famous people from SU list is that none of them, well almost none of them, do anything to promote the city. So as far as I am concerned all of those famous people are meaningless

What does any of this have to do with the original poster's question of relocating...

I'm partial to the Syracuse/central NY area because I've lived out that way before. And before now (I've been in the UK for the last 3.5 years) I lived in Albany for 15 years.
We're hoping to find us a place that's got plenty of country (space, nature etc) within a 30-40 minute commute (one way) and would love some ideas on what to expect in the summer and winter seasons (how much snow, rain, ice etc)
If anyone would chirp up about it I'd be very grateful!
thanks.

One of the good things about Syracuse is how quickly you can be out of the city and into the more rural countryside. On all sides Syracuse is surrounded by some very scenic, bucolic landscapes. I am fond of the areas south and west of the city myself. In my short time here (almost 3 months) I've enjoyed riding the roads and taking in the views in Lafayette, Onondaga, Camillus and Marcellus the most.

This looks very much like the Cazenovia/Pompey/rural Manlius area... Route 20 (aka the Cherry Valley Turnpike) runs along all of that, from east to west, and it all looks very similar. Those foothills and all of the lush greenery really make an impression, don't they? Gorgeous.

Loves Mountains great post, that is what I have been trying to tell this person for the past couple of weeks and some people here were arguing with me saying to move to Ithaca. Well you can get the same thing in the Syracuse area.

I don't really have an opinion of Ithaca (yet!), but I can say, if I were buying property I'd have no problem doing so in many areas outside of Syracuse like Lafayette or Pompey - it is just beautiful there, and VERY convenient to getting back to downtown (Lafayette is only 6 miles down interstate 81)

The pics above were taken in and around Lafayette, but not far from Pompey
Rt. 20 is one of my favorite rides, in either direction! I love going toward the Finger Lakes, especially Skaneateles!

Yet AGAIN, no one was telling anyone to move to Ithaca. Everyone was providing information on BOTH Syracuse and Ithaca, so that the poster would be able to make the *right choice for THEM, personally.*
Some places are better *for certain people* than others. Syracuse is better for me. Ithaca might be better for someone else. Not that they're actually better cities and competing to win... but that for our own specific needs and interests, each of us may find that a certain city is better suited to us.

So what...just shut up and support your city, stick up for it...don't help other people move out of the Syracuse area.

This person wasn't in Syracuse... and Syracuse isn't best for everyone. It's best for ME and others who love it. Sun worshippers aren't going to love it... another city would probably be best for them. Syracuse is not perfect and I won't give others false impressions of the area. The best *anyone* can do is give someone all the information they need and *let go of control and pride* and let that person make the best choice for themselves.
I don't know why you continue to order other posters around this board. We give information. Others make the best choice based on that information. This is called decision-making... best left to those who will be making the move, not you.
