The ANG uses the same spot they've always been at..on the Mattydale side. The Old Hancock Field AFB is mostly gone, the housing is dilapitated (sp?) the NCO AND The O Clubs are gone, I believe all of the Barracks are gone, the Theater is gone. There are a couple of businesses in the Old Comissary. The BX is gone..I think...it's just plain sad...My best memories are from that base..

I used to go to the small BX they have on the ANG side many weekends home from Fort Drum. It's still there, if that is what you are talking about.
No, the ANG and the AFB are in two different areas..the BX from the old AFB is either gone or should be torn down.
As far as the housing goes, I had made a suggestion to someone that the housing could have been refurbished and made into senior citizen housing, but they said that there was too much lead and/or asbestos so it would cost too much $$$ to refurbish. Very sad and such a waste of good housing.

I thought of that too, but heard similar things about why they don't do that. When I was in the Army, we would go to an old AFB in Louisiana and they used the old housing there as regular housing now. I wish someone had enough thought or imagination to do the same in this area.

That's what they did at the old Myrtle Beach AFB. Guess the powers that be around here would just rahter let that area look like an eye sore, but because I have such fond memories of that base, it's just heartbreaking to me.
WOW!!! I'd forgotten about that truck!!!
I also remember every day at 4 o'clock, they'd play the National Anthem on the loud speakers and you could hear them all the way over to housing and we'd have to stop what we were doing and listen....
That creek in between Montauk and Barrington Circle..wwo..memories..we'd slide down that hill in the winter time....
AND does anyone remember the rumor about "The Bloody Man" in the woods?..that little path from housing over to the old youth center?
YES! I remember the rumor about the man in the woods!! But with my wild, childish imagination, I used to think I actually saw some kind of ape man out there. (But it was most likely some sort of rock formation!)
Wow, it's so strange you should mention that because over the years, with the memories dimming with time, I often wondered if I had cooked that up myself. Now I remember that other kids were talking about it as well.
I wonder how that rumor got started. Did someone find a murdered corpse in there? Hmmmmm.........
I was in Air Police there, so I was on the other side from you guys. In the Barracks. it was top security for us. Montauk Circle sounds familiar.
When were you over there? I was there with my family in 73-74. My dad was an airplane mechanic. Held the rank of Tech Sgt.
