My family is possibly relocating from Florida to the Syracuse area. My husband is working on a job offer in Syracuse, however I will be going to college in Rochester. We also have a child going into middle school. I am looking for any suggestions for looking for towns/areas to live that would be a quick commute for my husband, an easy (tho long) commute for me AND a good school district for my daughter. We are an inter-racial couple. Might there be issues there? We have none in Florida, but i want to be prepared. Also, are there any magnet schools for the arts in the area for my daughter? Thank you for any and all suggestions!!!!
To be honest, I would look at some places in the Finger Lakes region like Auburn, Geneva, Canandaigua, Waterloo and Seneca Falls. I say this because you would be in between both Rochester and Syracuse. Out of those I mentioned, Geneva and Auburn are probably the most "diverse" and the others aren't too bad either. Ithaca would be a slam dunk if both of you could have a reasonable commute, as it is a very diverse city for it's size, has a very good school district and has great arts programs in the area.
As for a school of the Arts, Rochester has a School of the Arts that is a really good school. There might be some very good programs in other school districts though.

Also, what kind of work is he looking for and what is your line of study? I ask about your educational situation because there are plenty of schools in the Syracuse area.

I wouldn't consider the commute from Ithaca to Syracuse even remotely easy. 55 miles according to google maps, and 1/3 of it is on local roads.
I wouldn't suggest Ithaca because it's an hour for each of them and the OP wanted something within a close commute to Syracuse, for her husband. Now- if I was in the OP's shoes and MAD at my husband, I'd suggest Ithaca. Make him drive an hour when 20 minutes, on the long side, would do. lol - both options still leaving me with just an hour's commute to the Ra-cha-cha.
