It took them a few days to actually complete my order, but I finally got a shipping notice from Best Buy late Thursday. Of course they shipped it as slow as possible so I won't have it for a few more days.

I have a hunch that some bricks-and-mortar retailers are going to be advertising the HP tablet as a Labor Day "door-buster" type of special promotion. Check the Sunday ads next weekend; if you live near such a retailer and you're willing to get up at the crack of dawn a week from Monday, you might be able to score one that way.
Once you get the Touchpad, take a look at Preware. It allows you to load your own applications and apply unofficial, non-HP patches. One of my biggest gripes about the Touchpad was its extremely fussy WiFi support (slow, dropped connections, etc). I discovered that HP throttled the connection to 64k, and once I applied the patch to remove that, it was like I had a whole new device.
You'll probably also want to turn off a lot of the logging. I did that and saw a massive speed boost. There are a number of sites that have instructions on how to do this, just Google around.
I signed up for update's on any new releases of Touchpad inventory on the HP website. I received an email yesterday from them with the following text.
"Thank you for your interest in the HP TouchPad and webOS. The overwhelming demand for this product in recent days has made it difficult to fulfill your request at the present time, and we are working to make more available as soon as possible. While we do not yet have specific details, we know it will be at least a few weeks before we have a limited quantity available again. We will keep you informed as we have more specifics that we can communicate, and we encourage you to join the conversation here for the latest information."
