I'm thinking of buying one to have Internet access when traveling abroad..

Just to get an idea of it's capabilities, how's the experience of browsing these forums on a Kindle 3G?

Painful would be the only way to describe it. It's not horrible on mobile sites, but for general sites that are heavy on the text and links it's not great.

Each web page is turned into as many "Book Pages" as it takes to display the web page, and you have to use the next page / prev page buttons to "scroll" through the web page. The browser is "Experimental" and IIRC the conversion to Book format is done by the Amazon servers.

As an example I browsed to city-data.com/forum, and it was converted to 30 "Book Pages". I finally found the Computer forum link on page 25.

The first page of the "Computer" forum was turned into 12 Book Pages, and this thread (found on page 4 or 5) with only one post was converted into 4 Book Pages.
