I have a bluetooth keyboard on my iPad. It is part of the case that I use to carry it. At least with an iPad you can also use a full sized bluetooth keyboard.
This is one of the better features on an Kindle Keyboard!!
With iBooks on the iPad I am impressed. With the screen in landscape (wide side horizontal is displays both pages, if you turn it to profile it displays the page you are reading. Also you can bookmark your page etc. There is a one click access to your index and there is a search function.
Not sure of the features on a nook, Galaxy tab, etc. I bought the iPad because I was wanting a tablet and I have been wanting to transition to apple for my primary computers. I am old school when it comes to books. The iBooks is a really nice bonus.
I am considering an ipad but wondering if reading on an e-reader device like a nook or kindle is easier on the eyes for reading books for long periods.

I am not sure. I tend to think with the iPad wouldn't be an issue. I have no problem looking at screen for a decent amount of time.

YES, YES, YES,!!! The ipad does a wonderful job of lots of thing but it is not an easy on the eyes reader due to the harsh back lighting of the ipad. The ipad is TERRIBLE for glare in any bright light and gets washed out in direct sunlight.
Not to detract on bit from the ipad ,and other tablets, one has to remember that tablets are computers designed to ,in time, replace the desk top computers and lap tops of today. I own an ipad 1 and find it to be great when I use it for it's designed job.......portable computing....since nothing tops it for that job. The ibook program was a late addition to the ipad to gave Apple the bragging rights to a claim it as a "do it all" computer. As we all know "do it all" devices seldom do everything well. So I bought a Kindle Keyboard and never again will expect my ipad to do that job. I just get way more bang for my buck reading with my Kindle.
Kindle
Not Nook as who knows how long B&N will remain in business.
Kindle.
