Microsoft was quick to brush off the debugging hack that allows locked-down Windows RT Surface slabs to run any unauthorised desktop software. But now the exploit has been packaged into a slick jailbreaking tool that can unlock a Redmond fondleslab in seconds.

A programmer going by the name of Netham45 has released RT Jailbreak Tool v1, a batch file that automates the Windows RT trick first revealed by security researcher C. L. Rokr.
New tool jailbreaks Microsoft Surface slabs in 20 SECONDS ? The Register

Anything not sold officially through MS, it's the same with many of these devices.

If I want to develop something for a desktop PC I only need to write it and make it available. You might get some warning about installing it but none the less you can install it. There is literally millions of applications like this available.

With these devices I can't do that and have to go through MS to do it, MS gets chunk of the pie and they control exactly what is available for it.

In this case it actually refers to desktop software (as opposed to Modern UI apps) that didn't come from MS. They aren't locking users to the store, they're locking everyone out of the desktop.

This doesn't allow side loading of Modern UI apps.

There isn't much available to take advantage of this yet, since regular Windows programs won't run on RT, but it opens a door for further development.

And even software that does come from MS. Like, for example, Office 2007 if you could find a way to load it.
They are going to close this loophole. And someone will find another way.
Microsoft is really blowing this whole roll out of Windows8. Why even have "RT"? Just to confuse people? Great idea. I have completely lost faith in MS. And I was a die-hard fan.

In fact, we had a new employee start at my office. He is heavily invested in Apple. Desktop/Laptop/Ipad/Iphone. He asked if there was ANY way I could accommodate him. I have always said no to such requests. We are a Windows shop. Period.

I now have an Apple system on my Windows network...
