I have a Nexus 7 and I LOVE that thing. I use it all the time. It's much easier for me to use while I'm laying in bed to surf the net than dragging out the laptop. I have both the nook and kindle apps on it so I read my books on it as well. Plus it fits easily in my bag which I like.

Maybe check out the Dell Latitude 10. The high end model runs (real) Windows and you can use it on AT&T's network.

I think Toshiba is also making one.

I've heard that it's on par with Ipad mini, the only difference is that Ipad mini loads games a bit more quickly and it has a better camera, but Nexus 7 is only $199 for 16GB or $249 for 32GB which is still cheaper than a 16GB Ipad mini. I've been meaning to buy one, but have held off since I read that the next version of Google Nexus 7 is slated to be released in July of this year, so I'll be waiting for that updated version. They also have a 10 inch version, but that one is a bit more expensive.

I'm a non-techie, as well. I did some research and bought the 32gb Nexus 7 because I didn't want to pay the price for the comparable Apple product. If you search the web you can sometimes find the 32gb Nexus 7 for less than $225.00 with free shipping. It's pretty easy to use and so far I've had no issues with it. If you travel it's great because it fits easily into a purse, backpack, or carry on bag. It's definitely worth considering.

I got a 32gb Nexus 7 also. I knew nothing about tablets and researched all the ones in the $200-$300 range and chose the N7. I've been happy with mine and it has worked perfectly. I got a $10 usb keyboard/case for it from amazon and it turns it into a mini-laptop.

I'm looking to buy a tablet sometime this summer too for mostly personal use, but I don't know squat about tablets. I plan to:

take on road trips & use out in areas where there's no wifi hotspots
use apps with speech and language students
email
surf net
take pictures

I own no Mac products currently. That Microsoft Surface looks cool, but if it doesn't support 3/4 G like Dr. P says, what does this mean I'll have to do to access the net on road trips & other far out areas?

4G is a marketing ploy. Doesn't really exist. If you need a cellular connection, make sure your tablet runs on a LTE network and that your cellular provider has a LTE network.
