I'm still quite new to the iPad Air, but a frustration is trying to connect to the internet - the gadget seems to have a mind of its own (sometimes it will connect immediately, and sometimes I get the whirling circle for eons, and sometimes it won't connect at all.) I can be within a foot of the router and it doesn't seem to make a difference. But what I've also noticed is that the iPad isn't picking up any nearby connections like I can see with my desktop and my laptop, not that I can nor want to connect to those since all are locked and some too weak, but the iPad doesn't seem to see them.

More often than not, when it's not connecting, I turn off the wifi then turn it back on and/or turn off the router and let it reset, and I don't know if there is a certain sequence that finally gets the iPad to connect. I've also tried forgetting the connection and then re-entering the password.

So, I'm wondering if there is some sort of setting that I either engaged or missed to make the iPad more reliable? Or is it the nature of iPads to be picky and a pain in the neck? In my opinion the whole purpose of a tablet kind of device is connection to the 'net - can't do much with it except play games if it's not connected, and it's too light-weight to become a door stop.

I've experienced the same issue with both my ipad (2nd gen ios 7.1.2) and iPhone (5s ios 8.1). It doesn't happen often, but it's still a PITA when it occurs. Turning WI FI on and off works, and doing the same to the router also works, but neither solves the issue.

My wireless router is old (Linksys WRT54GS), and I'm contemplating replacing it. I'm not sure if that will solve the problem or not.

I've also tried to hard re-set each device and that works as well, but again the issue does still occasionally occur.

Here's some info from a similar discussion on an Apple forum.

Good luck.

Cuzzant ... thanks for relating your experiences and for that link to the Apple forum -- not that my problem is solved yet, BUT at least I know it's not just me!

I suspect it's more of router issue. They have a shorter lifespan than other hardware. Many people (unwittingly) "rent" routers from their cable companies, etc., which can be replaced by the company for free.

I don't know anyone who is "unwittingly" renting equipment. Most folks know they are paying for it.

That's probably the problem. The Op can figure it out by watching the number of Wi-Fi bars on the iPad. If the signal is weak, just get closer to the router and see what happens. If the signal gets stronger, then he could buy an Wi-Fi extender, or a stronger router. I was using a Belkin wireless router that was very dependable but a little weak for tablet surfing. Replaced it with an Apple Airport Express, and that solved the problem.

It's been a strange journey with the iPad. I was on vacation last week and the thing detected a host of possible connections at the condo and connected to the proper one easily.

Here at home I believe the issue is the kind of connection we use - a mobile hotspot device. Although it works just fine with our desktop and laptop and iPhones, it's not so "fine" with the iPad, but with patience sometimes required but not always, I can connect with the iPad.

I haven't taken the iPad out and about to hotspots (Starbucks, etc.), but I'll experiment and see what happens.
