Short Answer:
It means that your GPS should be able to support a memory card up to 32 GB memory capacity.
Good news, as these cards are very cheap, and 32 GB is a LOT of memory.
There is another term you need to know, "Class". This is how fast it can read / write. This used to be important as cheaper chips were slower, but the prices have plummeted so much this is unimportant now.
Just get the fastest: "Class 10".
Also, sometimes you buy a microSDxx and it comes with an "adapter". This is just a sleeve with the electrical connections so the "micro"SD card can be used in a "miniSD"xx or "SD"xx device. They typically cost nothing extra. But in the last few years, most devices have standardized on the microSD size.
Also, you mentioned a "Flash Drive" That is typically the name used for a memory stick that is self-contained and used to stick into a PC or laptop via a USB slot. It has memory inside, but also acts like an external hard drive. This is NOT what your device can use. Your Garmin needs a chip that is only memory.

Long Answer:
Your manual, page 17: "The device supports microSD and MicroSDHC memory or data cards"
What they didn't say is what all those letters mean.
SD = "Secure Digital", the actual standard describing the memory chip's shape.
microSD means the memory chip is the extra small physical size and shape, (they call that Form Factor), about the size / shape as your small finger's fingernail.
and the extra letters show how much memory it can handle:
microSD aka microSDSC: "Standard capacity" (up to 2 GB)
microSDHC: "High Capacity" (up to 32 GB)
microSDXC: "Xtra Capacity" (up to 200 GB)
