How long does it take to drive from Tallahassee to the Gulf beaches? Any good ones to suggest?

Agree with that - St. George Island has a public access state park with facilities, and there are also houses for rent for extended stays. If you want more development, restaurants, hotels, etc, then you will need go farther west to Panama City Beach or the Destin/30A area.

If you want do do stuff and have a live experience, Panama City hands down is your answer. There are bars, restaurants, shopping and other cities nearby with things to do. St. George is very small (pretty drive over the bridge though some single lane roads with no cell phone service in the middle of nowhere too) and I remember one good restaurant right on the beach. It's a decent little day trip without much to do overnight though.

contrary to the above poster, it is actually quite nice at st George island. No high rises or traffic to get in the way of the view or slow down your vacation.
