I will be visiting the area in August and may have to travel between Lutz and Port Richie at night. How long of a drive is it and are the roads safe? I went on Google maps and it seems like there are a lot of small country roads between the two places.

Both suburbs are predominately rural/residential. The main highways between the two are probably going to be US41 (north) from Lutz and SR54 (east/west) and maybe Little Road (north). I would estimate your commute at 20-30 minutes tops. I've driven these roads day & night and never been frightened. I wouldn't park in a dark area for any length of time by myself; though I wouldn't do that anywhere.

Yeah, the quick route is 41>54. Major highway, 54 is all new within the past 10 years. All well-traveled, but rural. Speed limit on 41 is 55 between Lutz & Land O' Lakes, and on 54, it's 60, I think... traffic usually flows around 65-70.

You can "backroad" part of your route with Lutz-Lake Fern Rd & Gunn Hwy. Nice drive when the traffic isn't too thick. They've added some traffic lights and lowered some of the speed limits on Lutz-Lake Fern that have made the formerly really nice drive slightly annoying.

And it's not far. I'd agree with the 20-30 minutes time estimate.

Be sure to get some BBQ at Hot Rod's BBQ at Livingston & Sunset in Lutz!
