Is it normal in US banks to have a minimum balance requirement of $25,000 and if the client falls below this then there is a monthly charge of $25 ???

This is complete news to me!..In UK, we only incur bank fee's if we go overdrawn!

What banks would you good people recommend?? I was trying to open up an account with Citibank who have been promising they can set up an account for me and waive bank fee's/minimal balance requirements..in fact that is how it was sold to me!...however Im not being told this is not going to be the case...only a week before I'm due to open the account and only a few days before I'm due to depart!!! Grrrrrrrrrrr!

25,000 dollars. Holy crap. No its not normal. My 16 year old sister has an account and there is no way that she has 25,000 dollars in it. I would suggest Chase.

I just checked on Suntrust and just like I thought they have free checking, so do most of the others.
Here's the link:

I wouldn't deal with Sun Trust at all and also their days are numbered. Very bad customer service, at least here in DC.
