No luck with that Spherion office in Spring Hill? I sent them a resume several months ago about an accounting job up there (I'm in Tampa); but, she told me the employer wouldn't even consider me since I don't live up there.

We'd LOVE to buy a home in Spring Hill, but I need a job up there first. I could never commute down to Tampa everyday. My husband's lucky. He can live almost anywhere and not worry about his job/commute. He's a mfg rep and just travels about everyday and works out of the home. Maybe I need to ditch the desk job and go into entry level outside sales.

We drove around Spring Hill a few weekends ago. The amount of homes for sale is unreal. I just KNOW we could find our big, fireplace, pool home on a nice sized lot up there, too. But...no Spring Hill job means no Spring Hill home.

Thumbs down st.pete times article

In the st.pete times forum on 2-28-08 was an article about college bound kids returning to hernando county when they were finished with degree would they come back to hernando county to work. None of them said yes. The article also talked about why they wouldnt which was because of lack of opportunities in the county. The article also talked about economist William Fruth stating that if hernando county was considered separately rather than as part of the tampa bay area the average wage would be at the very bottom of the 361 metro areas in the united states. The reason i am saying this is because i made a huge mistake moving here and dont want anyone else to do the same. If you are old and retired and have money it would be fine. Money and jobs are not here.

Yes shopping in Spring Hill has much improved over the last 5 years. Thata the end of the good news. Sink holes are still sinking. Taxes are still rising. Crime has risen. Traffic is heavier. And no there are still no jobs that you could actually support a family on. Its a magical place!

Actually, taxes have dropped and so has insurance. Housing is extremely affordable. Crime may have risen slightly but the area has become more populated and has a lot more stores. Also, as far as sink holes go, it's not just Spring Hill or Hernando County. Pasco County seems to make the news all the time with sink holes shutting down roads. I agree decent paying jobs in the area are hard to come by but if you're willing to travel a bit or have a degree it is possible to get a decent paying job. The new stores also bring new jobs although the pay not be great, at least it's something. The area is easily affordable for young couples just starting a family or for those retiring. I still laugh when people say that Spring Hill has heavy traffic, it may be heavier than it was at one time but it is in no way heavy traffic.

Default The early days

I can remember first coming to Spring Hill and the lack of traffic, I could stand on Spring Hill Drive at 8 PM and not see a car for at least 1/2 hr, the streets were pulled in by 9PM........at the 4 corners there was no light, at any given time of the day, you could breeze through the intersection without much trouble, Mariner Blvd ended at Linden Drive and then it was dirt roads, 7-Hills Plaza wasn't there yet and you shopped at either Winn Dixie or the old Kash n Karry on 19, back then the traffic on US 19 was slow in both directions, there was no light at Trenton Ave and 19 (Red Lobster). No light at Timber Pines and no lights going North on 19, my how times have changed.
With growth comes traffic, but when I think back to what used to be, I'll take what "was" rather then what "is now".

I just spent the last 8 days traveling the back roads of Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida.
You can still find towns that roll up the streets at 8 PM, where you don't see a car for an hour and where crime is virtually non existant.
In those towns you will also have to drive 45 minutes to go grocery shopping, drive an hour and a half to go to work unless you are a farmer or in some type of service industry and if there is ever a problem you are quite far from a hospital.

With increased population usually comes more traffic and increased crime but Spring Hill is not bumper to bumper traffic and does not have a huge crime problem. You can still find an affordable home here in a safe neighborhood.

For the poster who said there are no jobs you could support a family on, I guess the thousands of families here that are doing just that would disagree.

My husband and I moved to Spring Hill from Tampa in 2006. We are late 20s/early 30s, both have professional jobs and support ourselves very well. I am a Tampa native, but we chose to move north because the Tampa housing market was insane. Spring Hill has MUCH less traffic than Tampa, and everything is so convenient. I find that most of Spring Hill overall looks far neater and better-maintained than many of the main drags in Tampa. We live very close to the "Four Corners," so there is easy access to shopping, etc. There are plenty of stores and restaurants, and yes, we even have a Starbucks!! The YMCA here is awesome, too. You'll have to travel to Tampa for nightlife, of course...

You hit the nail on the head, we have several acres of property in TN within walking distance of a beautiful lake, our nearest neighbor is 1/2 mile down the road, and yes, shopping is quite a distance into town, you don't want to run out of milk and drive the 35 minutes into town, yikes only one Walmart to be had, and its packed every day with people from "FL" have met about 45 people from where other than Spring Hill, even my honeys barber is up in TN now full time, so haircuts are not a problem. Yes, the local hospital is around 35 mins. away and because its a tourist area, the roads are just like here in FL when our snowbirds are here visiting, taxes are much lower than in FL, shoot, for several acres I pay less than $400. HOI is also much cheaper and going through the smoky mountains will absolutely take your breathe away.

I'm in the same boat with mogirl00. We are just about to make an offer on a house in this area, but now I am scared to death. I am afraid that we will make a BIG MISTAKE. We have a 10 year old and by the time we move there permanently, he will be in High School. I don't know if I will doom him to a life of bad schools, drugggie classmates, and boredom.
If anyone has suggestions about a better place for us, I would be grateful.

Cool Such Misinformation & Negativity

I agree sounds like someone needed to vent. May I clear some things up and tell you that many of the aforementioned retailers are coming to or are in the area of Springhill. Just down the road in Newport Richey there is a Starbucks in operation and a Cracker Barrel being built. Right there by the new JCPenney store is another CB breaking ground anyday. Office Depot, Mattress Giant and Best Buy are definites and negotiations are underway with a coffee shop, sporting goods, book store and clothing retailers. There is alot of interest in the area from retailers so maybe someone should check their facts again before spewing such negative opinions - and they are just that opinions.
