My finance, teen son & I will be relocating to Clearwater in the next few months due to his job. My son is 14 & very much into skateboarding. I am looking into the best public high schools for him & the best area to live.....preferably fairly close to the beach. I would appreciate any advice anyone has. Thank you very much.

You're really not far from the beach from anywhere in Pinellas County. I think most of the North County high schools are pretty good. I know East Lake High and Palm Harbor University High always get good rankings. I don't know much about Dunedin, Tarpon, and Clearwater High Schools. They might not be the absolute best, but I don't believe that they are horrible schools.

Countryside High School in NE Clearwater has always been strong academically. Anywhere east of US 19 in Clearwater falls within that school district. Countryside High School Dunedin High School which handles the west side of Clearwater does not have a good reputation. If you want to be close to the beach and have access to a decent high school, look at extreme NW Clearwater or SW Palm Harbor which puts you into the Palm Harbor University High School zoning.

I forgot about Countryside, but yep, I've heard good things about it. There are some pretty nice neighborhoods up around there. Pure suburbia, but a lot of them are fairly established.

Thumbs up Dunedin Skate Park

I'm afraid I can't speak much to the High Schools. I went to Largo High School myself, and I turned out alright. I don't, however, have children, so I don't have a parent's perspective on the schools here.

I can tell you, though, that Dunedin has a pretty cool skate park at one of their community centers. Here is the link to a blog post I wrote about it:

Dunedin, Florida Skates!

Good luck to you and your family. I believe there are lots of nice places to live around here. In your case, it seems like it boils down to finding the right school zone.

Enjoy!
