I realize that sanibel is supposed to be the best of the best, but that will be a little too far for us to travel. We will be staying in Lakeland and would like to take our daughter to find some good shells. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Honeymoon Island has an amazing quantity of shells, not crowded at all, a LOT of beach to cover. I haven't been to every beach in the area, but this is a good one and closer to Lakeland than most others. Bring a cooler with water, etc. or just bring money for the concessions there.

I agree with Marco on this one. Honeymoon or Caladesi are very good.

Many years ago Treasure Island was great.

Venice Beach is also a very good shelling beach.

Honeymoon and Caladesi are great. So is Egmont Key...can only be accessed by boat. There are quite a few boat tour type outfits that will take you out there from Gulfport, etc. It's definitely worth the trip out there - not only is the shelling good there but the key has ruins to explore, a lighthouse, and tons of gopher tortoises. We went this past summer and my family loved it - found a lot of great shells and quite a few large/unusual ones.

Thanks for the suggestions. Where do you catch the ferry for caladesi? Will everything be open this time of year?
