Default Historic Preserved Homes in Tampa

We've been looking at some historic homes in Tampa. I'm wondering if anyone has first hand experience with having a preserved home / house on the national registry of historic places in the Tampa Bay area? I've heard contradictory info about paint color restrictions and remodeling. Do you have to have exterior paint colors approved? Can you remodel your kitchen in a modern way and still keep preservation status? Are there tax breaks for historic home owners?

Thanks for your help!

There are two designations. National and local as I understand it. National to my understanding in Tampa would be like Hampton Terrace. No restrictions other than code. Local would be like Hyde Park. Approvals can be required. Then you get into contributing and non contributing structures.

Here you can read a bit more

Historic District Maps

No tax breaks that I am aware of although there are some I think for complying renovations for contributing structures for non residential purposes. Meaning I think you saved an old commercial building.

I'm no expert on this but lived many years in the Tampa Heights area.

Good luck

Oh nice, there are some great old houses in the Tampa Heights area. We've also looked in Ridgewood Park area and South and Old Seminole Heights.

Thanks for the feedback and link, helpful stuff

It's nice to see a post regarding a search for homes actually within Tampa versus a tract-home subdivision in the 'burbs. Tampa, St Pete and Clearwater have some beautiful older housing stock which seems to go mostly unappreciated. Good luck in the search!
