Don't worry about the crime. Petty crime can happen almost anywhere and the violent stuff is usually confined to certain neighborhoods that you'd be unlikely to end up in anyway.

What is your price range?
Rent or buy?

Where is job located?
Acceptable commute time

All these questions are important before anyone can give you advice.

The City of Tampa has a few areas that are family oriented.....generally in FL if you want that you're pretty much forced into the suburbs with gated communities!

South Tampa is nice, but I am not sure about "family oriented", it is too close to high crime areas for my taste and empty of people...check out Lutz, Odessa (both on the Hillsborough County side not Pasco, that's too far out) areas of Carrollwood...or move to Pinnelas County in Palm Harbor...Tarpon Springs.

I was under impression that south tampa is pretty much south of Kenedy that whole peninsula. I might be wrong here tho.

It is, but here's the catch, the closer you get to Bayshore the more expensive properties are, so if you want "more affordable" then you have to be Closer to Kennedy than Bayshore....the Westshore side is further from Nebraska and has nice areas and communities like Westshore Yacht Lub, Culbreath Isles etc...and is nice but then as you get closer to Gandy blvd it becomes spotty again..

Many homes have been taken from shack status to mansion so now you have areas with old old homes, less maintained next to this new Mansion...so, it's weird.

I like Culbreath Isles, if I were to buy, that's where I'd buy....but then....you're closer to the water and insurance goes through the roof....doomed if you do, doomed if you don't LOL
