I am massively impressed with the goodwill people have shown NQ during her predicament. I went homeless during this recession and the people here on the northern east coast were positively mean. I pulled myself up out of the mess. I went homeless because of no family to turn to. Your treatment of her as a human being going through a rough trial has shown me how kind the people of St. Pete/Tampa can be. Another plus to moving there. Let me cross my fingers that I can transfer and buy a house for me and my sons. I especially loved that you encouraged her to continue her education and endure. Even when people suggested she go back home it was only about concern for her safety. Humanity is something people lack in the DC area and I think that shows in how certain aspects of our government is either handling this recession or caused it. My grandfather grew up in the Great Depression and spoke of how people supported one another. He then went on to fight four years in WWII in the South Pacific. He always remained kind and supportive to people throughout his life. I think that is what being an American is all about.

Thanks for being the optimistic encouraging Americans I know we all can be. You give me hope the country is getting back on track.

NQ: You are a true inspiration. Tell your children and grandchildren about how you refused to give up. Congratulations I only wish I found this thread earlier.

Thanks for sharing your experience, honu_follower. I'm surprised how quick people are to point fingers about who caused our mess of an economy-- and how quick they are to trash those that are suffering most as a result. There's a frightening class prejudice alive in America that just may represent the final frontier of civil rights.

People ignorantly judge the homeless as a uniform class when they make up a larger group than some racial minorities, and they are just as varied in social demographics. So when some factory closes and some mother with twins loses her job and COBRA runs out in eighteen months, if she can't pay her rent she falls into the same category of everyone else that is homeless-- "scum". That's how a lot of people grossly represent an entire economic class of people regardless of their reason for being a part of that group.

I'm not some socialist hater who wants to push anyone's political identity around. I just think that most of us could do a better job giving our neighbors the benefit of the doubt. I'm guilty of not doing this properly myself, and I think I might be able to change that tomorrow. If our world ultimately gets worse, I'm really hoping we're wise enough to avoid blaming those that wind up hurting the most.

Yea people can be mean. I was once told by someone who worked at walmart "I'd always make sure I hade a place to go, that's how I was raised" it a really snoby voice. she said this cuz i asked her to watch my backpack cuz she told me i wasnt allowed to wear it in the store and her job was to just sit there by the door and stamp peoples return items and such.
I wanted to reply to her that I was raised not to stuff my face with doughnuts cuz she was probly 500 pounds, but i decided to not stoop so low.

I did face a lot of discrimination. but also a lot of kind people. there are both out there, I think guys have it harder though, as a young girl some people seemed surprised when they leaned my situation and more sympathetic. though some aromatically thought i must be a prostitute (gerrr) but that was more rare. I think guys have a harder time getting help though

Default Not homeless anymore

ok well all is good im in my own home, in a very nice neighborhood, working at a job that i'm already loving. i can easily make $60 in 4 hours vs. the $60 in 8 hours i use to get working at a restaurant. the work is something i feel i was made for, like a perfect fit. one of my clients the other day tipped me extra and tolled me how grate a job i did. my boss and coworkers are super nice too.

this is a pic i took of my new neighborhood

and the is me in my yard in front of in my own door which looks like its glowing in this pic lol Not homeless anymore!

I know some people on the forum thought that going to school while homeless was a bad idea. but it really was the only option for me, i could never keep up with work in most beginner jobs because of the fast pace and over stimulation.
so if i didn't go to school to get licensed in a field i knew i could do i would have continued to not be able to work. and because i was able to get a grant it would not have saved me any money by not going to school. you can go to school while homeless. and if u cant get a job with your current skill set it may be best. sure going to school while homeless is tough and not ideal but it can be done so just do what u gotta do if that's what u want and know you need.

thankyou for all the support everyone. there has been a lot of helpful comments on here
