I'm not sure there is really anything to see off our beaches. The water has become so cloudy and there aren't any close reefs that I am aware of. If you want something to see when snorkeling open water, do yourself a favor and go down to Pennekamp at Key Largo, it's well worth the trip. Or stick with freshwater locations such as the ones listed above, and I'll add Devil's Hole to that list.

I saw some people snorkel at Howard Park in Tarpon Springs...not sure what they saw...but I've seen quite a few last summer...

There is a lot in Boyton Beach on the east coast...I have a friend who goes there quite a bit and has some really cool photos of underwater corals and fish etc...really cool!

Try googling "Shell Key" or "Egmont Key." There is less expensive ferry service available, or more expensive guided boat trips where they provide everything for you. If you do a google images search you'll find that these two spots aren't too hard on the eyes (unless you're just not in to pesudo-remote tropical islands)

People snorkel for scallops off of Howard Beach in Tarpon Springs. They are the small scallops and are very sweet.
