It is not legal to live in a dwelling with no electricity or water, but people sometimes do it when the going gets tough.

I am sure TECO wouldnt be thrilled about what you are doing, but I cant imagine it being illegal. What in the world are they powering with an extension cord? I hope not more than one or two things!

TECO will work with people who are struggling I have been told.

I'm sure it is probably against electrical code. I just installed a garden fountain about 15 feet from my outbuilding and did so by running an extension cord inside conduit to a GFCI outlet inside the outbuilding, and I know that is against code, even though I used conduit, spec'ed the amperage for the right gauge of wire, plugged into a GFCI, etc.

You better ask your self is it smart? Just watch some "judges" shows on tv and you know the answer...

If you want to do it and be smart then have them pay a flat fee upfront every month and if they don't pay then unplug it right away. I'm not sure if it is legal or not...but you can call the utility company without mentioning your name and ask the question.

During the hurricanes a few years back tons of people did it for neighbors who didn't have power but they did. No one I know charged anyone, its just what we do. Who gives a rats arse about few buck on their electric bill whether they pay or not... thats the problem nowadays, no compassion and too many tightwads.

Loosen up... what goes around comes around.

They could run a fan to keep cool and a television... thats about it. Maybe a light but the television would produce light anyways. Charge a phone.

I don't know if its legal or not but I'd do it and have done it in the past.

Chances are they will plug all kinds of things into that extension cord and create a fire hazard for both you and them. A 60-100 ft extension cord draw LOTS of current because of the resistance in the wire. Do yourself a favor and go outside and feel the wire, I guarantee it is hot and dangerous!
