1. Orlando-Kissimmee, Fla. -- 557 deaths, 255 PDI.
2. Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Fla. -- 905 deaths, 213 PDI.
3. Jacksonville, Fla. -- 342 deaths, 178 PDI.
4. Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach, Fla. -- 1,555 deaths, 168 PDI.
5. Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, Calif. -- 938 deaths, 139 PDI.
6. Las Vegas-Paradise, Nev. -- 421 deaths, 135 PDI.
7. Memphis -- 266 deaths, 133 PDI.
8. Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, Ariz. -- 867 deaths, 132 PDI.

That's nuts! I bet it's due to so many tourists unfamiliar with the streets, combined with so many motorists. A large percent of People in NYC use Taxis, and public transit.

I blame 95% of it on the pedestrians themselves. I drive ALL DAY with my job and I see close calls constantly. There are plenty of bad/distracted drivers here and im sure those idiots play a bit of a roll but most of the pedestrians are just idiots.

i think a lot of it has to do with people who move here from northern pedestrian-friendly towns. tampa is most definitely not set up with them in mind at all. it was a bit of a shock to us when we moved here from dc, and that's saying something (people drive like psychopaths in dc).

I have lived in Florida nearly my whole life. I have never been hit by a car. Why? I look both ways when I cross streets.

We have lots of tourists who are probably half-lost driving around other tourists who are walking around half-lost, and we are probably the most car-centric state in the country. What would you expect?

Drive down Busch blvd at any time from Nebraska to Busch gardens and I guarantee you will see at least one idiot trying to run from one side of the road to the other while cars are coming (that's six lanes and a median for those not familiar)

Have you ever walked through midtown at lunch hour? You can't imagine how many pedestrians there are. Taxi's only add to the danger!Yes people use the subways but they don't deliver a person to their jobs doorstep! I can't understand why Tampa is ranked so high...the only factor could be is the speed limits are higher on roads like US19(for example)which would lead to a higher fatality rate!

The study was done in 2011 by Transportation of America and focused on pedestrian deaths from 2000 -2009. The study found that number of these deaths were equivalent to a jumbo passenger jet crashing monthly for the same time frame!
