GTE, Suncoast, and Florida Central are probably the ones with the most branches in the Tampa area.

my Family's been with them since 1990, I've personally had an account with them since I think 2000, and we've never had a problem with them. If there's enough branches near to to where it isn't a pain to do anything, definitely go for it.

I think the main thing to consider is how often will/do you go to a branch. Most ppl rarely go into a branch office and you can always get 'cash' when you buy at a store. Many places do not charge for using ATMs at Publix either.

I need a branch nearby because I want to have a savings account there where I made my deposits in person. Otherwise, what you say is true.

Another reason to choose Florida Central is its Ultimate Checking account. It's a free checking account with some very nice perks. The two main ones are a 3.00% apy and free ATMs nationwide. These perks do have monthly requirements like debit card purchases. You can get up to 4.50% apy but this has loan requirements.

If you're wondering how they can offer such a high interest rate, the Ultimate Checking is what's called a reward checking account. Here's a good overview of reward checking accounts.

One downside with Florida Central is that it's not part of a shared branch network.
