Hey All, well the time has finally come... I am close to being on my way to St. Pete. Making a pitstop down in Dallas to spend some time w/ my parents and grandma then heading that way. For anyone whose made the trip, what's the best route to take? Mapquest shows taking I-20/I-10 or just taking I-10 the whole way? Any recommendations? It's a long drive!

I made this trip this time a year ago, from Fort Worth. I liked the route I took because the countryside was green and pretty interesting and I found major lodging and restaurants along the way. I spent three nights at hotels along the way and arrived in St. Pete around lunchtime the 4th day. I was careful to make regular rest stops and had my cat in tow, which complicated things a little.

This was my route. I headed East on I-20, until Shreveport, then South on I-49, through Alexandria, onto US 190 towards Baton Rouge, then onto I-12 which merges into I-10 East to Lake City. There I took I-75 South towards Tampa, and finally exited to I-275 towards St. Petersburg and arrived downtown by Baywalk to visit the tourist office. The hostess there gave me a nice welcome to town and had good information.

There is no good route. You take US 90 and it takes too long

Quickest route is I-20 to I-49 to I-10, then US 19 south to Tampa.

There is no "most enjoyable" route, as most of the entire drive is terrible. You could take US 90 for long stretches, but it's just as bad and will take twice as long. I-10 in the panhandle of FL and parts of AL/MISS/LA/TX is about the worst, most boring stretch of highway.

I like taking Hwy 98 around FL panhandle and going through the small fishing villages but it is a long drive. I usually take I-10 to HWY59 or Hwy19 then to 20/27/19. Then Hwy19 to 98 down to the Suncoast Expressway. Not as boring as the interstate IMO and you go through some small towns just watch your speed. Most of it is a 4 lane hwy.
