My husband and I are looking into selling our home and moving to FL. we are a newly wed couple and currently live in Indiana.
I am freaking out about moving so far away and excited at the same time!

We are looking to spent about $80k for a house. Wondering what kind of house we could get for that? also how much is home owners insurance there?

Any thoughts on the st petes area or suggestions would be wonderful!

Thanks your your help!

Ballpark probably a 2/1-2/2 around 900-1100 sq ft. depending on the area.

I recently showed some clients a really great house in Shore Acres that was a 2/2/1 1100 sq. ft for 83k. Not far from 4th, close to the interstate etc. I thought that was a fantastic deal for a cool neighborhood.

I live in Shore Acres (Snell Isle, actually). It's a very nice neighborhood, especially if you're starting a family. I'm also from Indiana. Move to St. Pete. You'll like it here.

I don't own a home, but I know insurance can be very expensive. If you're near the water or in a floodzone, look for houses on stilts. Shore Acres is a flood-prone zone. You might also consider the Crescent Lake and Kenwood neighborhoods, to name a couple.

I'm pretty sure there are bargains to be had in St. Pete as well as all of Florida. If you aren't squeamish about doing a fixer-upper, you could get a bargain. Short sells, bank owned, foreclosed.

If I had the money, I'd be buying a retirement home...

Do be careful where you choose.. some of the lower lying areas of St. Pete are prone to flooding even after a small amount of rain. The area near Tyrone Mall floods very easily as does Snell Island, Shore Acres. The best areas are the highest areas of town known as Disston Ridge neighborhood, approximately 38th Ave N and 49th St. N... still good neighborhoods there to find.

Insurance, as with all of Florida is very high.

Tyrone Mall is not low-lying. It's either in evac E or non-evac, depending on what side of the street you're talking about. Not sure where the flooding is, but I wonder if it's an infrastructure issue.
